A lesson about jumping to conclusions

Did you all hear the story about the woman trampled at Walmart? Everyone was all over it. What did it say about our culture, people asked, as hands wringed. Turns out the message about our culture was entirely different than it seemed.

Incredible! I checked to see if Drudge did a follow up on that story and he did. I am thinking now that one of the reasons Drudge will run with headlines and stories that show off the "easy to jump to conclusions" mindset is to test and train our sensibilities. In my case I had no reason to not trust the verity of the fact she was trampled, and that was sad and perhaps damning for the stereotype of the "mad shopper", but I knew that this was only one store out of many thousands.

Coverage of tort mongers is far too rare in the mainstream for being such a prevelant force. That such a possibility of the woman being one should have snapped into my mind. This is why news needs to happen on the internet, so we can see it as part of a larger fabric, at greater remove, where our ability to make conclusions (and when to) plays a larger role.

Sorry if I go off subject, but I was just reminded of this:
My brother used to be an EMT and he told me that whenever an ambulance arrives at the scene of a car crash and the EMTs think someone is faking an inury in order to file a lawsuit, the EMTs will make the straps on the stretcher a little bit tighter and use extra tape when applying bandages.

Well, there you go, it only goes to show just how much this society has degenerated. Everybody out for themselves and all that rot. Sickening.
