Jimmy Carter must retire

No, seriously, go sit on a porch somewhere and stop embarrassing us.

Just be glad you did not read "The Hornet's Nest." Some of our presidents are excellent writers. The Diary of John Quincy Adams is amazing. Gertrude Stein called Grant's memoirs the greatest work in American literature (and the story behind the book is amazing: a broke Grant dying of throat cancer writing to keep his wife out of poverty, literart agent Mark Twain trying to get a good price for the book, the old men in blue making the rounds getting subscriptions for the book, Grant dying a few days after finishing it). Lincoln's and Jefferson's words will be with us even after our Republic has become just a memory. Even the numerous books written by Teddy Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson still prove very useful today. Even James Monroe, the last and certainly the least of the Virginia Dynasty, produced a rather interesting work of political theory.

Jimmy Carter's books are awful. The man should not retire. He'll write more awful books. Granted, Carter has done a great deal of charity work over the years and I do not doubt his commitment to taking up the Cross. That does not mean he should spit out books.

No, presidents-and add most political figures- should not write novels. Carter, Newt, William Weld, etc. Official memoirs are bad enough. Now we have politicians writing bad novels. Groan.
