Denis Boyle's roundup of European news is a must-read. An excerpt:
Among the ink-coughing columnists in the European press sinister — where, as Yeats put it, all think as other people think — the reaction to the Spanish elections is almost uniformly one of cautious but satisfied elation; the slap given by voters to the Americans is understood with gratitude. As the Guardian points out, the war against terror can't be won anyway. So why fight it? Most Old Europeans would prefer negotiation and peaceful coexistence with al Qaeda to an alliance with the natural-born killers from the USA. Terrorism, in the Europe of the future, will be a don't-ask, don't-tell problem. Timothy Garton-Ash, also writing in the Guardian, wonders if Madrid was Europe's 9/11. No, but it's close: Madrid was Europe's 7-11 — a convenient place to hide and drink pink Slurpees until all the trouble goes away.

The Moroccan government, out of fear of the US, captured 700 Al-Qaeda. The Moroccans who blew up the Spanish train had fled to Spain to escape from the Moroccan government. Without fanfare Syria and Iran are also cracking down on Al-Qaeda because of US troops on their borders.
As a consequence, deprived of sanctuary and financing, the Al-Qaeda that are left are pouring out of the Middle East and into Europe where security is lax. Europe will be forced to join the War on Terror because now Europe is the front line.
Unless Europe wimps out, this is the beginning of the end of Al-Qaeda. George Bush is a genius.

Coldly, objectively, rationally....clearly concepts Boyle is not familiar with. Cherry picking a handful of stories to support his hissy fit - not great journalism really, but very entertaining. Thanks for posting that. Cheered me out of the hangover.

I can't really comment on newspaper stories - never reading them too often, but the trend in most Sunday papers is to have opinions from all sides. They are not stories or news that Boyle is dealing with,the are opinions.
