Human Rights in Iran

My friend, and tireless activist for Iranian democracy, Banafsheh Zand-Bonnazi sends me some terrible news today about her father, imprisoned journalist Siamak Pourzand. You can read the whole story here. At the moment, I'm just spreading awareness about this but if I hear of anything that we can actually do to help him, I'll let you all know.

Banafsheh writes:

Tell them to send a VERY SIMPLE e-mail saying FREE 74 YEAR OLD, SIAMAK POURZAND, JOURNALIST, UNCONDITIONALLY...FREE ALL IRANIAN POLITICAL PRISONERS UNCONDITIONALLY... they should send it to istiftaa@wilayah.org , Khatami@president.ir

Then the U.N. various offices...crueda-castagnon@ohchr.org , lventre@ohchr.org , csaunders@ohchr.org , llupoli@ohchr.org , scronin@ohchr.org , mdelalama@ohchr.org

Thanks Darling...PLEASE help me get this info out there Karol. These bastards have now hit an all time low...

I will set up a prayer chain at my church.

Posted by: Von Bek at April 21, 2004 12:39 PM

I have set up a prayer for him at my church for a weekend mass. I hope it offers solace for his loved ones and that the Lord responds to the prayers.

I've thought for awhile now that Iran, more than any non-Israel country in the Middle East, is the great democratic hope, once Khameni and his band of theives is removed.

My prayers are with Mr. Pourzand and his family.

Thank you to all of you who are thinking and praying for the Iranian people. As Gib rightly says Iranians are by far the most pro-Western of any of the Islamic nations, and having experienced a catastrophic fundamentlist revolution for the past 25 years, they are more prone to secular democracy than anyone else in the Middle East, many of whom still labour under the delusion that Islam is somehow the answer to all their problems. It is not - just ask the Iranians!

I'm posting this on my journal, and I'm trying to spread the word.

I hope he's freed soon.

In children's circuses could stay their troubles?
There was a time they could cry over books,
But time has set its maggot on their track.
Under the arc of the sky they are unsafe.
What's never known is safest in this life.
Under the skysigns they who have no arms
Have cleanest hands, and, as the heartless ghost
Alone's unhurt, so the blind man sees best.
