Appeasement? Why not?

A writer for the lefty British magazine New Statesman shares the following wisdom:

'Appeasement has been present wherever terrorist violence has been controlled successfully'

'Appeasement is only another name for the willingness to negotiate'

The worst part? It seems he is serious. How long before Europe gives in to this kind of thinking?

Considering that the previous weeks cover featured Bin Laden dressed as a fascist, with the accompanying article (by Nick Cohen) drawing comparisons with various 20th century despots, I don't think that this weeks is necessarily the prevailing opinion. Appeasment wasn't on the agenda for Cohen, quite the oppisite in fact. I will try and e mail it.

The writer thinks that stopping terrorism with 2 or 3 decades of appeasement is an accomplishment.

Appeasement did not stop terrorism in those countries. All the terrorists died of old age.

Urbane, it just feels like Europe is 'going wobbly'. Here is a question for you: Does Europe want the US and Britain to succeed in making Iraq a stable democracy? Or would they like to see us fail? Just your opinion but be honest.

Appeasement works if you're willing to submit. I'm sure Hitler could've been appeased if the world would start speaking German and kill all the Jews, homosexuals and invalids. It's about the choices that are made in appeasement. Could Europe really live with the choices it would have to make? Andrew Sullivan points out this piece and this is the money quote:

Although I had never experienced racism in the UK, it opened the eyes of a lot of Muslims, including mine."

But it was the events of 11 September that crystallised Sayful's worldview. "When I watched those planes go into the Twin Towers, I felt elated," he says. "That magnificent action split the world into two camps: you were either with Islam and al Qaeda, or with the enemy. I decided to quit my job and commit myself full-time to al-Muhajiroun." Now he does not consider himself British. "I am a Muslim living in Britain, and I give my allegiance only to Allah."

What, exactly, are the appeasers offering?

"it just feels like Europe is going wobbly"

Like I wouldn't be able to find anyone sharing John Grays opinion in the U.S.? One article in a magazine is evidence ? Can you tell me who the appeasers are ? Journalist making a name for themselve ?
My personal opinion is that I want the Iraq mission to succeed.
I haven't a clue what the rest of Europe thinks, but even the newly elected Spanish PM reiterated his opposition to terrorism early on, and his support of the War against it (remember, the argument early on was that Iraq was something of a diversion,so he doesn't view the overthrow of Saddam as part of this). It's certainly not in Europes interest for the Middle East to explode. There seems to be a general feeling however that Bush has fucked up big time, acted too rashly. That was the biggest fear all along. I wouldn't say that this is exclusive to Europe - would you?
This weeks NS is the first time that I have seen the word appeasement mentioned (remember that even then it is a fairly low circulation magazine a that). It does bring to mind Hitler, and the appeasers back then (among them the U.S. - remember, the U.S. didn't enter the war till after Pearl Harbour).
If you looked - not even too hard, you could find a lot of articles from all sides in Europe arguing in favour of the action in Iraq. The preference seems to be to only post ones that fit your pre concieved ideas.

Urbane,

Does it not seem to you that there is a certain level of glee in Europe when things go bad in Iraq? Be honest.

Among certain people, yes, in a told you so sort of way (the same way as it is in the U.S I would imagine). I am not sure how widespread this is - maybe visit again and see for yourself.
Most news I see is presented in a sombre way.I don't see how anyone could be gleeful about what is going on out there.
