Running on an old war

According to the Los Angeles Times, "in one 24-hour period," Kerry "invoked his service" in Vietnam:
To fend off attacks by his Republican rivals;
As evidence he will fight to expand healthcare;
As evidence he understands the complicated landscape in Iraq;
To explain his love of peanut butter-and-jelly sandwiches.
That last one calls for an explanation: "His passion for PB&Js, Kerry told his companions, dated back to Vietnam, where he not only ate them frequently but traded them for other commodities."

Wasn't he in Vietnam for like three months? Even in an intense situation, would three months of anyone's life really stand out that much?
Posted by: Director Mitch at April 29, 2004 06:23 PMFrankly, if I liked Kerry, I'd feel sorry for him. How can you be viewed as tough on War and Defense against Bush? It's a monumental task, I'm sure they are dealing with every day, and to date all they come up with is veteran.
The irony is, Kerry is repsonsible for that very word equating to something bad. Now he wants to use it to mean something good.
He'd be more consistent touting himself as a Vietnam Protester. Then at least he could say he will pull us out of Iraq just as in Vietnam and turn it over to the UN.
Not that that appeals to me one iota.
Posted by: Scott S at April 29, 2004 06:35 PMKerry’s four months in Vietnam gave him a severe case of combat stress syndrome. It was exacerbated by his guilt over the war crimes he committed. He has never recovered and is still mentally ill.
Doesn’t his staff know that people are laughing at his continual references to Vietnam. The answer is: yes they do. They plead and plead with Kerry to drop the Vietnam references. But he will not drop the references because he has an irresistible impulse to relate everything to Vietnam. Proof of his mental illness is that he does exactly the same thing in his social conversations.
Kerry does not need a different campaign manager. He needs a different psychiatrist.

Kerry was thier for 4 months. A person could be thier for one day and still get killed or wounded.
Are you less of a soldier if you got killed after being in Vietnam for only 1 day?
Ann Coulter wrote about a democratic politician who got severerly wounded by a live grenade that another US soldier accidently dropped. The bitch had the nerve to ream him like that wasn't a big deal. And then knock him for wanting to drink a few beers with friends after completing his mission.
Soldiers get killed and wounded during war in hundreds of different ways. Just because they weren't wounded while killing dozens of the enemy doesn't make them less of a hero.
I am sure some unlucky sailor was sitting on the shitter on a ship in Pearl Harbor when the Japanese Suprise attack droped a bomb or torpedo and killed him as he was taking a dump.
It was a suprise attack. Does this make him less of a soldier because he got killed on the toilet instead of fighting the enemy?
