My brother's school is not as liberal as I thought

Drudge: Commencement speaker nearly booed off stage for anti-Bush rant.

A lot of parents thought, rightly, that a commencement was not the place to air you're political views. A sociology professor, (I've always wondered: what can one do with a sociology degree other than teach it? Does it have any practical application at all? I'm not just being snarky, I really want to know) calling the parents bad role models, shockingly disagreed: 'I thought this was a totally appropriate place to talk about politics because that's the world our students are entering,' said sociology professor Cynthia Bogard. 'I only wish their parents had provided them a better role model.' Totally.

And, after it was over, Doctorow got into his limousine and motored back to his understanding intellectual equals in Manhattan.

No, there is ABSOLUTELY nothing (well nothing worth the four years you put in for the degree) to do with a sociology degree. You either have to get an MSW and do something with that, or go a different route, which is what I did by attending law school.

Also, my commencement speaker on Friday was Sen. Joe Biden. While he was moderate in expressing his views, they were decidedly anti-Bush and all about the war, which he attempted to tie and make it seem that it was appropriate for him to be using the issue of the war in Iraq as the main topic of a speech at a graduation. He didn't get booed, but people were not happy.

Practical Applications of a Sociology Degree:

Public Administration of Social Services

Social Welfare Impact Consultant and Training to the legal, lobbying, advocacy, and policy forming professions.

Public Policy Advocate at People for the American Way, or other think tanks.

Part Time Expert Consultant for trial lawyers, Michael Moore, or other down with the west filmmakers (we can't really call them revolutionary anymore, can we, since everyone knows the real and successful revolution is the Hamiltonian, or capitalist, one.)

at a recent college graduation the secatary of education spoke. He was pro bush speaking to the christian conservite right (as a side note: the footage of wesly clark prasing president bush that came out during the primaries was also flimed there a couple of years ago)

Which basically it was a 15 min commerical for bush's education policy. The only comments i heard where that the speaker did not have to bring up the segeration thing, which i thought was really funny.

Karol, my best friend from childhood got a Masters in Sociology from Berkely. She's working for Social Services in Oakland, CA. Insert your own "snarky" comment here.

The Rockford Institute's Scott Reichert, a real American conservative as opposed to the Beltway and Big Apple neocons, made a point when Chris Hedges got much the same reaction at Rockford College in Illinois last year:

"In the long run, civility and decorum may be the greatest casualties of the Chris Hedges incident. The movement conservatives who praised the actions of the protesters no longer make even a pretense of holding themselves to a higher standard than they do their political adversaries. What can we expect, however, when the “conservative leaders” of today are the descendants of the liberal activists of yesteryear—or, in many cases, the very liberal activists themselves? Until we restore civility and decorum to political discussion, the war will continue to rage—both at home and abroad."

I think that's pretty much correct considering many of the leading neocons were also some of the biggest radicals of the 60s and embrace the same tacitcs (I'm thinking David Horowitz in particular). Why should young "conservatives" be civil ? They were raised on Rush, Little Ms. Treason and the like. They have no clue what American conservatism is really about besides screaming at each other and Bush and is party are always right.

I think a lot of the neocons have done much to transform American conservatism from a nationalistic small government movement to what it it is today (pro defecit, pro spending, very internationalist, and the GOP is always right). The left has always been this way (look at the way they dropped venom on Ike, Nixon and Reagan). The right-at least the old Buckley-Kirk right-was a bit better. Not anymore. It's kind of hard to condemn the left for their insane attacks on Bush when the "right" was doing the same thing to Clinton only a few years ago. It's too bad. American conservatism really needs to be a bit more then "hooray for the GOP" cause otherwise they'll just sell us out for big government, lots of spending, lower immigration standards, funding the NEA...

Oh wait. They already did.

MORE TERROR ATTACKS IN GAZA AND THE WEST BANK

The Iraelis continue their criminal terrorist attacks. . .

A four-year-old Palestinian girl was shot dead yesterday in a ravaged Rafah refugee camp as some of its destroyed homes were being visited by a senior UN official on a fraught trip to the town.

Meanwhile, Diana Moon has letters for both sides in this neverending conflict.

Dear Palestinian Arabs,

You have now endured nearly 40 years of occupation. Since the mid-1980s when you began to demonstrate your dissatisfaction, you have engaged in numerous protests, some violent. A prominent feature of these protests is the presence of small children. Given that the Israelis have demonstrated that they have no compunctions about training live fire (in the latest case, tank shells) at demonstrators, why do you allow your children to attend these protests?

Dear Israelis,

You have now carried out nearly 40 years of occupation. Since the mid-1980s the Palestinian Arabs in the territories have engaged in numerous protests, some violent. A prominent feature of these protests is the presence of small children. Is it not possible for you to study a few manuals about the most professional way to contain protests without training live fire upon demonstrators? Your recent protestations of innocence ("we didn't mean to harm anyone", "it was an accident") are ringing very hollow, given that you have had more than 20 years to refine the technique of proper crowd control.

As you know, context is important, and since you have a habit of dropping bombs on heavily-populated neighborhoods in order to carry out "targeted assassinations," which inevitably kill many unfortunates whose only crime is proximity, I am forced to conclude that you just don't give a shit about Palestinian lives. Maybe if I were you I wouldn't either, but I'm getting tired of your doing this in my name, with my tax dollars, and with my signature on the side of the aircraft and the incendiary weapon.

Sincerely,
Diana Moon

This should be translated and published in every newspaper in the region every day until you Reich Whinge rube numbnuts get the point.

Reicheingers ? Yes. The pro-Isreali neocons are really Nazis. Damn, why didn't I think of that ?

Robert, I don't care about your insults but this is your last comment off-topic. Any further comments that have nothing to do with the post will be deleted.

"Robert McClelland" has been blogroaching around a large number of Libertarian and Right Wing blogs lately. He inevitably gets his dumb ass banned and moves on. Go ahead, Karol, you're going to have to anyway, sooner or later.
