Joe Grossberg wonders how the film 'Saved' (which mocks Christians) avoided controversy. I think it's because Christianity is the one group you're allowed to make fun of.

There are people who got cranky about it, but that was mainly a while back, when Michael Stipe (who's an investor or producer or something) compared it to a monster movie, only this time, the monsters were "Jesus freaks". The people who actually made the movie are pretty up-front about the fact that they changed the movie after Stipe went off.
Also, I think everyone recognizes that the kind of Christians that Mandy Moore portrays in the movie will never be portrayed as the actual good guys, but the fact that none of them were running child porn rings out of their basements was actually a step forward. It's something people are actually grateful for.
My theory as to why the Simpsons has so many conservative devotees is based largely on the fact that Ned Flanders is neither a hypocrite or secretly a pervert. (The Beatles memorabilia collection doesn't count)

has anyone seen "Saved?" I am tempted. May provide some very funny social commentary.
Posted by: Vanessa at June 18, 2004 10:04 AMNed's a bit of a wally but his heart is in the right place. And everyone in the Simpsons is in chruch on Sunday including Disco Stu, Bumblebeeman and Sideshow Mel.
Saved is just one more attack in the war on Christianity in American public life along with the rabid attack on the Gibson film and efforts against Christmas and school prayer. But Gibson is now the most powerful man in entertainment according to Forbes so the good guys won at least one round here.
Posted by: Von Bek at June 18, 2004 10:09 AMChristians and Black Republicans. You are allowed to say and do anything to these two groups.
Posted by: Jake at June 18, 2004 10:43 AMI saw "Saved." It was funny, and pretty clear that it was arguing for a more liberalized version of Christianity, as opposed to against the religion itself, or religion in general. When Stipe made those comments, the director and everyone else involved distanced themselves from him.
In fact, I read several reviews (the Village Voice was one) that criticized the film for not being anti-Christian enough.

Yes, "real" Christian values are definitely the hero in the film and the holier-than-thou Christian establishment is what gets lambasted.
Karol:
I was more interested in why Christians didn't protest the film; why the media didn't do so is self-evident.
Posted by: Joe Grossberg at June 18, 2004 11:26 AMChristians? Bleh! Just another word for the goyim. Who the hell needs them since they co-opted the American Hizbollah (Party of G-d), otherwise known as the Republicans.
Posted by: Michael at June 18, 2004 11:42 AMMaybe Christians didn't protest it because they didn't recognize themselves in it? Satire only works when the suject recongnizes himself.
I once sang a Russian song in front of thousands of Russian immigrants from NY area, and the song made fun of, well, Russian immigrants in NY. They got so mad at me, I thought they were gonna kick my ass. My favorite moment was when one guy went, "This song is a bunch of lies! I don't even live in Brooklyn!"
Posted by: Ivan Lenin at June 18, 2004 11:50 AMThat's hilarious Ivan. If people can't make fun of themselves, that's a problem.
Posted by: Karol at June 18, 2004 01:05 PMMichael,
Who needs 'em? Um, Jews most of all, actually. Don't believe there would be an Israel if not for Christians.
Maybe the Christian soldiers are just picking their battles and this one isn't measuring up to be worthy? It's not as though it's a documentary, for cry eye. It's a satire, meant to be amusing rather than defamatory. Maybe that's why people aren't up in arms about it.
Posted by: bond girl at June 18, 2004 01:43 PMMiss Moneypenny (aka the Bond Girl) may be right. Either that, or, possibly, good satire simply is not well understood in America.
Posted by: Michael at June 18, 2004 02:38 PMThat's right, Americans are so simple minded. I do say they don't understand satire. Don't even get me started on irony. (/sarcasm)
