My neverending career dilemma

Do you choose immediate money or the possibility of more money someday? Is it all about working for yourself or should your younger years be spent working for (and learning from) someone else? Can you leave your friends, boyfriend and family and go pursue what may be a great opportunity? Is 27 too old to still have nothing figured out?

Twenty-seven is when I started to figure things out. By 40, I was there. But I'm a man, and we are notoriously slow starters.

I know what I want to do, I just don't know how best to get there. In movies the choice is always clear, follow your 'heart' and everything will work out. But I don't think that it really will. I need a mentor. Where does one find one?

Consider (if you already haven't), joining professional organizations in your chosen field, telling people you are looking for a mentor (even those who wouldn't seem logical. The best leads can come from the most unlikely sources.) and going to events in the field you want to be in.

I hope it's not too old. It just *can't* be too old...

If you have had no experience in the field, you should work for someone in that field first. There are a 1000 details you must know in order to be successful in running your own business.

You can learn about those 1000 details by losing a lot of money or working for someone who knows those details and learn from them.

I'm convinced your "heart" (that innate sense of what you're supposed to do) is smarter than you give it credit for.

My first job out of law school, I should have never taken. Everything inside me was practically screaming at me "run away!" But I was sick of working at Office Max, and I didn't want to wait for something better, so I took it, I spent 10 miserable months at a job I hated that frankly, I'm still bitter about.

I promised I'd never ignore my gut again. I haven't, and I'm happier for it. And making statements like the one I just did allows people (my wife) to add "Well, of course you ignored your gut back then! It was so much smaller than it is now!"

I can't tell which choice is the one your gut's telling you to make. But your subconscious really does merit listening to.

Good luck.

Hope not.

Is 50?

I'd say more money some day. If you can find somebody worth working for, work for them. Actually, one of the reasons I lost interest in my current job is that I got a new boss who's really brilliant, but she won't teach me any of her stuff; there's no time or necessaty for that. Ironically, I will be teaching her my stuff.

Gosh, I need a mentor, too. And a manager. And who doesn't? :)

money now and save it for later.

compound intrest is king.

Also, if you go for the money now i doubt that you income will decline as you advance.

wow, I think now I kinda agree with Cube. I guess it all depends how much money.

Sweetie, You're smart, funny and fabulous. Whatever you choose will be a great success, as they say, everything always works out for you. Or am I the only one who says that? :-)

Since you're republican why isnt the KKK recruiting you?

I thought you were just going to get married and have babies. What's with all this career nonsense. You're not fooling anyone.

Enlightened, I'm already in the KKK. We've decided to shift our focus and go after 'enlightened' morons first this year.

Thanks to the rest of you for your thoughts on this. I'm still thinking things over but will have an answer soon.
