Oooooh burn.

Christopher Hitchens on Michael Moore:

In late 2002, almost a year after the al-Qaida assault on American society, I had an onstage debate with Michael Moore at the Telluride Film Festival. In the course of this exchange, he stated his view that Osama Bin Laden should be considered innocent until proven guilty. This was, he said, the American way. The intervention in Afghanistan, he maintained, had been at least to that extent unjustified. Something—I cannot guess what, since we knew as much then as we do now—has since apparently persuaded Moore that Osama Bin Laden is as guilty as hell. Indeed, Osama is suddenly so guilty and so all-powerful that any other discussion of any other topic is a dangerous "distraction" from the fight against him. I believe that I understand the convenience of this late conversion.

In other words, he's got a movie to sell now.

You know, that's very well written, but, Hitchens is so unpredictable I never know whether to trust him.

hahahahahahaha the crazy extremist right is nervous!

this movie is going to be HIT and its scaring republicans!

I cannot wait to see the footage of bush staring like an idot for a full 12 minutes bec he had no advisers around to tell him how to react. On the big screen - I see it now.

I am dancing in my seat!!

Clearly, you don't know who Hitchens is for you to call him extremist right. Put down the crackpipe and get yourself to a library.

Dean,

I disagree with Hitchens plenty but he's a great writer and sometimes he couldn't be more accurate.

I've hundreds of anti-Moore pieces in the last few years, but this is probably the best, beating out TNR's review of "Stupid White Men" (which called it "Chomsky for children."

I'm not a conservative either, of course, but I think Moore is, as Hitch said, "a shady and silly man."

And GetBushOut: Why is the idea of Bush sitting there, after the plane hit on 9/11, something you "cannot wait to see"? If you really cared, wouldn't you be upset about such a thing?

Actually, from a writing stand point, I found the article to be fairly turgid.

But, leaving aside what or what is not good writing, it is certainly an interesting piece.

I am curious to see 9/11. Many of the articles I've read say that it is essentially accurate, but old news (of course, old news that in many ways was not widely reported and is only old news to political junkies, which is not the audience this movie is made for). Certainly, there have been pieces by far right pundits slamming Moore against the wall, but this is a more substantive attack and raises much more serious questions about the movie.

But, ultimately, whether this movie has a significant impact or not will depend on how well it plays in middle America and, as I think we all know, there are large segments of America that can be potentially swayed by compelling visual images and a pointed message, even if that message (or the movie) is crap. Just ask Mel Gibson.

I suspect that the movie will have a few instances where I will say to myself, damn Bush/Ashcroft, etc. is a pompous and scary ass...but that is nothing new. I also think he'll throw a lot of shit at the wall that I will wonder about its accuracy and be far from convinced.

Of course, as someone who thinks Bush is objectively one of the worst Presidents in history, has made America less safe, squandered opportunities on the international stage and who wonders how many moderate Republicans are sitting thinking that they can't wait until the election is over so they can stop kissing Bush's ass and take their party back, I hope that, regardless of whether the movie is objectively good or not, it sways voters. Sure in my gut I'll feel bad if inaccurate fluff (if that is what this movie is) influences an election ... but if it influences it against those guys who attacked Max Cleland as being un-American, the comeuppance will be delicious.

Signor, 'who wonders how many moderate Republicans are sitting thinking that they can't wait until the election is over so they can stop kissing Bush's ass and take their party back'. Um, were you around for the Reagan tributes? Was Reagan any less conservative than Bush? I think he was much more conservative than Bush and yet he is adored by his party and the country. What you write is boilerplate anti-Bush stuff. The truth is, even most Democrats are more conservative than their nominee. It's not the Republicans that are adrift, it's the Democrats. The complaint I always hear from Republicans is that Bush is not conservative enough.

Posted by: Karol at June 22, 2004 01:18 PM

I am not talking about his conservatism, per se, I am talking about a President who has alienated the world community, gotten us into a war on false pretenses, whose administration has done a less than stellar job of managing that war, who claims that his authority is derived from God, who causes us to expend billions extra in a war, but lowers taxes at the same time, whose tax cuts, ultimately (because of the alternative minimum tax) really only benefit the rich, who stone walled the existence of a 9/11 commission until the families had to play the "we are the fucking families of the dead, give us this commission for god's sake trump card," who plays politics at every turn, who blocks stem cell research, who blocks business visas which prevent the best and the brightest from coming here to work for our companies, who won't invest time or money looking into alternative sources of fuel, who marches us into Iraq on the weak theory Iraq was a threat to America, but basically ignores North Korea which is easily the biggest threat to world peace on a large scale (and possible source for terrorists to get large scale arms).

Karol, you say I am making boiler-plate anti-Bush stuff, but I am mentioning specific policy decisions. You have never answered any of my (or Rick's) challenges with any sort of pointed policy views. Everytime you have ever been challenged you stop posting when it gets to the point of what about this policy and this policy and this policy. So what exactly is Bush not conservative enough on? What is it you want to see him go out and do? And what are your answers to the above? How are those good things?

Posted by: Signor_Ferrari at June 22, 2004 02:54 PM

To be fair, I think Karol has answered this question many times, to wit: "I like Bush for a lot of reasons. First, and to me most importantly, I see the war on terror in the same way that he does. I think the war in Iraq was a good thing. I think strong support for Israel is a good thing. I like that he's scary. I like that he's determined to bring democracy to the Middle East. He may fail, but then we all have. To leave that cesspool untouched is to ask for a million more 9/11s and to expect that it's all over for us as soon as one of those countries gets a nuke.

I like low taxes. I wish he would cut spending but I would bet that a Democrat in the office would spend as much as he did, if not more. The Democrats aren't exactly known as the party that cuts spending.

I have my issues with Bush. I hate the prescription drugs plan, his insane immigration policy, the gay marriage constitutional amendment but compared to terrorism, these are minor things. We can't argue about new entitlement programs for the richest segment of the population if we're all dead.

Further, my problems with Bush, sans the amendment one, are problems I would have with any Democratic president. I think liberals live in fantasyland where they think about how they'd like things to be without ever figuring out if its possible. That's why I'm a conservative. I considered the right to be much more grounded."

That was Karol speaking, not me -- clearly. Well, clearly for anyone who knows that I am a poster child for Kucinich '04.

P.S. I do not know how any of the above are "good things."
