Plans
Back in January, I did this excellent internship at a great Public Affairs firm in DC. It's called Shirley&Banister and if you ever need a PR firm, they are the most effective and intuitive firm around. Their client list was so impressive to me. They represent at least two groups of which I am a member (the NRA and the Club for Growth) and have handled book launches for a bunch of other people of whom I am a fan (Zell Miller, David Frum, Danielle Crittendon, Bernard Goldberg, Ann Coulter etc.) On their impressive list, I saw Herman Cain. I remembered the name from an article by Deroy Murdock, another of my favorite writers and someone I frequently see out and about in NYC, in the National Review about Cain. Cain seemed extremely impressive in the piece (and in all the subsequent pieces I read about him when I chose to do a media audit on him in my Public Relations class at NYU). The fact that S&B was handling him was icing: they only handle the best.
I followed coverage about him all year and my admiration of him just grew. When I graduated my Campaign Management program, his was the only campaign in which I had any interest. I was planning on starting something of my own (I still will, just later than I expected) but couldn't stop thinking about the US Senate race in Georgia. So, I'm going. I'm leaving on Saturday and am not sure when I'll be back. The first showdown will be on July 20th, with three Republican candidates leading the pack. Then, if nobody gets over 50%, there will be a runoff in August with the top two. Finally, there will be the November general election.
I hope I am in Georgia until November.
Watch the Cain race, I think it will be the most interesting of the season.
If anyone out there is in Atlanta or the surrounding areas, contact me. I would love to meet some readers/bloggers while I'm down there.
And my last political party in NYC for awhile will be this Thursday's Republican meetup (at the Manhattan Lounge on Second Avenue between East 89th and 90th) so come by and have a drink with me.

Posted by: Vanessa at June 22, 2004 01:19 PMCongrats, good luck and I hope it all pays off. Damn, there is nothing like a good campaign to make you feel totally engaged and that you're working for something real and valuable.
Posted by: bond girl at June 22, 2004 02:02 PMbond girl,
Karol said she's working on the Cain campaign in Georgia, not the Barack Obama race in Illinois.
Posted by: Dawn Summers at June 22, 2004 02:07 PMRaising Cain, huh? We'll miss you at the many events. Best of luck.
Posted by: bobm at June 22, 2004 04:20 PMI think this is a good move for you. If Cain wins you have a good chance to be on his Senate staff for 6 years.
Karol, would you take such a position if offered?
Posted by: Jake at June 22, 2004 08:23 PMI don't know, Jake. I have such entrepreneurial blood in me, I want to open something of my own. But, I can't say it wouldn't be very enticing.
Posted by: Karol at June 22, 2004 10:37 PMDawn,
I know! And aren't we both very relieved that is not the case??! ;-P
