Love Free Trade? Prove it.
Jim Demint, considered the 'free trade' candidate in the race, has won the Republican nomination for US Senate in South Carolina. His opponent in November is Inez Tenenbaum, a wildly popular state Superintendent of Education (yeah, I can't believe that a state Superintendent of Education could be wildly popular either but there it is). As is often repeated by her supporters, in 2002, Tenenbaum got more votes than any other statewide candidate. Again, do you even know the name of your state's Superintendent of Education? I'd like to think that the Republican candidate is going to have an easy time in South Carolina but it's a place in which the Republicans are conservatives and so are the Democrats. Tenenbaum is for the death penalty, supported the war in Iraq, is against gay marriage and favors a ban on late term abortions. The dividing issue is trade. Club for Growth is assisting with the Demint campaign so if you've got any money to spare, believe in the cause of free trade and see what an opportunity Republicans have in South Carolina, consider making a donation through the club to Demint's campaign (or, of course, to my favorite candidate Herman Cain).

Good thing Club for Growth isn't a 527 organization, eh?
Posted by: Dawn Summers at June 23, 2004 10:42 AMDemint did not win on the issue of trade; he won the primary because David Beasly during his term as governor went after the symbols of Southern heritage. He took down the Confederate battleflag and now the voters took him down twice. This is still an important issue for many GOP primary voters as well as general voters across the South. In Georgia, Gov. Barnes who also went after the CSA flag on the state flag got defeated in an upset back in 2002. The issue of Southern heritage is not going away in either SC or GA.
Posted by: Von Bek at June 23, 2004 11:36 AMBeasley lost not so much because of the flag issue, but because of a lone Democrat's brilliant pr campaign that featured, of all things, the creation of a state lottery. When Hodges, the Dem who beat Beasley in '98, proved to be incapable of anything more than pushing through a referendum on a lottery, the people voted him out.
And as for why Inez is so popular in-state -- well, she brought the horrible dead-last in the nation SAT scores up and forced school boards to hold administrators and teachers accountable if the students don't perform up to standards.
To New Yorkers (or anyone outside of South Carolina) the fact that a superintendent of education could be popular is unbelievable. The fact that they could even get the nomination for Senate is even more puzzling. But it's the way it is in SC and Inez will show that to everyone when she wins in November.
Posted by: Sara at June 23, 2004 03:33 PMI remember the Georgia convience store guy commericals well. Having said that, Beasley got too big for his britches and lost a lof of conservatives with the flag that he needed badly in 98 and yesterday. While the flag did not save ole Charlie Condon, conservativs rallied against sleezy Beasley yesterday. You're right though-this is going to be a close race. Inez is the best horse in the Dem stable since the days of the Reileys and my old boss Gov. McNair. This and NC are going to be suprisingly close races.
