Go ahead and call me racist.
I went to the Townhall.com Meetup yesterday in Atlanta. It was in an office, which I thought was kind of odd. In NYC, meetups are basically excuses to drink with likeminded people. In Georgia, they actually have themes and bring in speakers. The theme in Woodstock, GA was the Fair Tax and Herman Cain spoke to the group. The theme at the one in Atlanta was illegal immigration and we watched a presentation by a guy named D.A. King.
A former marine, and founder of a group called 'The American Resistance', King said that it was the first such presentation he has ever given and if so, he is a very quick learner. His presentation was really incredible. I'm greatly opposed to illegal immigration, and not just because I had to immigrate the legal way with my parents waiting years for permission to come here. With the world being what it is, and the threat to us being as big as it is, it makes me uncomfortable that our borders are so open and that millions of people enter every year and blend into the crowds. It's too easy to say that 'it's just Mexicans coming here to work hard by taking jobs Americans don't want'. There exists a real possibility that Al Qaeda members can walk unnoticed into our country. Yes, they could come here legally and wreak havoc but then at least we have some idea of where they are and what they are doing. King's presentation was also chilling because it documented how easy it is to get an American driver's license and all the privileges that come with it. In a few states, a Matricula Consular card which is issued by the Mexican government to its citizens living abroad, is all you need. To prove how easy it is to get one, King got one for himself (scroll down to the bottom). Check out his site, it's pretty mindboggling. I know we've had the debate here before but I just don't understand how anyone can be for us not enforcing our immigration laws and allowing our country to accept these lawbreaking people with open arms. King will be featured on a CNN special in October and I hope he does a tour. He is a must-see.

Al Qaeda members are overwhelmingly white people and you don't think Mexicans are so bad, so where's the racism?
Posted by: Dawn Summers at July 7, 2004 09:58 AMDawn, you know you're not 'allowed' to say things like 'I'm against illegal immigration' and that the racist label is thrown around rather lightly by your people.
Posted by: Karol at July 7, 2004 10:03 AMBest line since being in Ann Arbor: illegal immigration is the U.S.'s fault. If we didn't have an economy that offered these people jobs, they wouldn't come here. Also, the U.S. government historically offered routes for illegal immigration, encouraging it, and setting up sociological connections on the path to America. People who come here illegal never think they're doing anything wrong.
Right, that's why they hide from the government.
Posted by: candace at July 7, 2004 10:46 AMK, I think you're projecting your otherwise greatly racist feelings onto this one non-racist position that you hold. Illegal immigration hurts everyone, most of all the illegal immigrants themselves who are often exploited by greedy, opportunistic smugglers who sell them a bill goods.
Legal immigration is definitely better. (Although, I admire your great faith in the government "knowing where and what legal immigrants are up to"...do you really think they know where you are right now? or now? how bout now?)
I'm pleasantly suprised by your firm opposition to illegal immigration. My biggest gripe with the current administration was the amnesty plan that Bush was kicking around. I'll keep an eye out for King.
Posted by: Von Bek at July 7, 2004 01:04 PMI know next to nothing about illegal immigration, but I know what it's like to wait for years to come here, and I also know people who came here legally, but were deported, or are currently facing deportation, because of beurocratic technicalities. When things like that happen to my law-abiding friends, of course it makes me bitter that so many people don't even try to abide the law, and get away with it.
I was thinking: will this amnesty really help Bush get those hispanic votes he's supposedly after? I don't think so, because hispanics who vote came here legally (again, supposedly), and I don't see why they wouldn't have the same bitterness that I have, simply because the illegals in question are their former compatriots.
I (speaking for all ultra radical liberals) would be excited if the immigration problem became a big pre-election issue: there is no other issue as alienating Republican voters from Republican elites. Currently economic needs of the Empire just require abundant supply of unrepresented and unprotected working force.
Posted by: rev at July 7, 2004 01:45 PMDrivers License should be used for what it's name implies. We need a National ID card for security ID.
Posted by: PAUL at July 7, 2004 02:48 PMIllegal immigration is unfair to illegal immigrants. Each wave of illegal immigrants is willing to work cheaper than the prior wave.
Much of this work should be automated but isn’t because the continuing waves of illegal immigrants provide cheap labor.
Posted by: Jake at July 7, 2004 03:06 PMhHAHAHAH...reminds me of the immigrants from the future episode of South park!
Posted by: Dawn Summers at July 7, 2004 04:07 PMI don't see being against illegal immigration as being a racist postion. Being against immigration, period....maybe. But I really don't understand why you would believe being against a criminal acivity would be racist.
Everything you said about our borders being porous is on point. I heard a figure that something like 2,000 illegals a day are being rounded up on our Southwest border alone. Who knows how many others get through undetected. Cubans continue to wash up on Florida's shores in inner tubes or, more alarmingly, on speedboats that come in undetected.
Our country is wide open to anyone who really wants to get into it.
The Bush Administration has had 3 years to strengthen our borders and has failed miserably. Money and resources that could have been used to provide better national security have gone...well, you know where. It's a glaring deficiency of this administration and one that every Democrat and Republican ought to be concerned with.
Posted by: Rick at July 7, 2004 07:34 PMHuh. I guess if Dawn doesn't think it's racist, it must not be racist. She's black, you know.
Posted by: ss at July 7, 2004 09:13 PMActually, I am African-American. Or latina.
Posted by: Dawn Summers at July 7, 2004 09:16 PMThe Republican/Wall Street Journal establishment likes illegal immigration because they want cheap labor. They do not care much about what impact it has on ordinary Americans.
