The phantom hit

Do you ever get a hit on your blog and so, of course, you visit the site to see what they've linked to and you can't find yourself linked anywhere? How does this happen? It just happened to me with Jane Galt.

Maybe you temporarily made the "Referring Web Pages" list?

Posted by: Joe Grossberg at July 7, 2004 07:23 PM

I think that was only after I wrote this post since I haven't linked to her lately.

It's happened to me several times from various referrers like Newsweek, USA Today and Slate. The weird thing is that just about every article or website cited as a referral from sitemeter I enjoyed, bookmarked and eventually blogged about it.

Well, I'm the guy that visits here after various porn sites.

But you probably already knew that.

Some web browsers -- like Konqueror (or however it's spelled) -- will show that the page visited before yours (whether they clicked on a link from there OR just hit a bookmark/typed in a URL after viewing it) as a referring site, just because it was the page they were on before yours.

Well, I visited Jane Galt, just to see who she is. Too eerily familiar to Ayn Rand characters.

She says some not-so-remarkable, but typical comments on politicians in general. Flat out evidence of liberal pessimism. Reminds me of all my acquaintances throughout the years who say they hate politics.

Jane Galt: "You see, difficult as you will find this to believe, politicians lie. All of them lie. Even nice politicians who agree with us, and are smart, and have really good hair and a nice speaking voice, lie. They lie frequently. They lie about the outcomes of their policies, and they lie about their reasons for enacting them. They lie about their past accomplishments, and they lie about their future plans. In the vast soulless meat market that is our political process, the guy who gives the most misleading impression, without actually getting caught in an out-and-out falsehood, generally wins."

Maybe I need to correct the liberal accusation and simpy say she's got too much pessimism.

Posted by: Slant Point at July 8, 2004 10:59 AM

Yeah, she's no liberal.

Yea, I've gotten Jane hits from her referrers, on occasion.

I also once met her, and we shared a plate of nachos.

Are you listing in Blogrolling? She has a random link generator in her blogroll, so maybe that's it?

Posted by: Stephen at July 9, 2004 12:50 PM

I get it all the time actually. I don't know why, but I sure won't complain!
