You haven't lived until...(a continuing series about life in Georgia)

....you're a Jew in a car at 8:30am in Eastpoint, Georgia and a Catholic gets into an argument with two Baptists over whether or not Catholics are going to hell. Apparently, Catholics are hardly considered Christian by the rest of the Christ-loving contingency. Who knew?

(For the record, there is no debate over whether or not Jews are going to hell. We're toast.)

All protestant sects are really just offshoots of Catholicism. They couldn't cut it as Catholics so they created their own religion. It started with Henry the 8th (the original Bill Clinton) and spread to other street corners and honky tonks throughout Europe.

If they say you're going to Hell--Just pity the Baptists and move on. :-)

Catholics have a lot to atone for. Their history isn't the best. But Catholics in the South are about as reviled as any group -- no matter how old their transgressions or how far they as a people of faith have become more accepting of others.

The South has many admirable qualities . . . religous tolerance isn't one of them.

Sincerely,
Kevin Patrick -- Irish Catholic, Notre Dame alum

As a Catholic who grew up in the South, I disgaree somewhat with Mr. Patrick's comments. Convent burnings and Know Nothings popped up in the North, not the South. Catholic communities in New Orleans, Savannah, St. Augustine remained strong, if not the hubs that Boston and New York were. But Mr. Patrick is right in someways as well. In the North, especially in New York and New England, I used to hear "you worship God in your way, I'll worship God in mine." In the South, you are more apt to hear "you worship God in your way, I will worship Him in His." The moral abivilance from modernity is much more common in the North than the South. Witness such Northern "conservatives" such as Specter, Pataki, Mayor Rudy, Bloomberg, Rowland, Chafee and so on. These "conservatives" support sodomy, same sex marriage, abortions, big government and gun control. Needless to say most of these Republicans could not be elected dog catcher in the South.

As for Jews and evangelicals, as you said before on this site Karol, religious rightists are generally pro Israel. There is one theory in fundamentalist Protesntaism that manitains that Israel must be held by the Jews for Armagedon to come-which is followed by the kingdom of God. The Jews will then be offered one last chance at salvation-they either accept Jesus as Lord or be damned. So you're not toast quite yet, :)

Oh, awesome! So, Jews get to see if all the Jesus stuff is for real before we decide? Does everyone else get this one last choice or just us?

Posted by: Karol at July 18, 2004 07:49 PM

Only the Jews still alive and only 144,000 will be saved. I dont know if the rest of us will get a choice.

Posted by: Von Bek at July 18, 2004 08:19 PM

Where does that number come from?

Posted by: Karol at July 18, 2004 08:26 PM

Revelations. Chapters 10 and 14 if memory serves me.

A Jew must be a Republican in order to get into heaven. That’s why God thought only 144,000 slots would be needed.

Don’t worry Karol, your work for the Republicans makes you a shoo-in for heaven.

I think G-d was being ambitious with the 144,000 slots then, Jake.

Just to correct a little history, it was Martin luther (who was a former preist, and who married a former Nun), who started the restortation which is basically the protestant movement.

Henry the 8th started the anglician church when the pope would not grant him a divorce.

As a side not the two different popes that those two different historical events occured under were both from the Medici family.

I once went on a business trip to Sea Island, Georgia, an ultra fancy enclave on the coast. Driving back to my hotel one night, I passed a highway sign that said "Jew Town." No directions, no other words. I never could find anyone who would tell me what it meant. I felt very lonely.

Posted by: Michael at July 19, 2004 10:16 AM

PS -- Cube, Luther started the Protestant "Reformation" (of the Roman church).

Posted by: Michael at July 19, 2004 10:19 AM

Are you sure they meant all Jews were going to hell, or just you? Get clarification on that.

Von Bek are you still a Catholic? Growing up I never met non-Catholics outside of my church, in the past few years I have met so many Catholics, I'm wondering if we're having a renaissance!!

Posted by: Dawn Summers at July 19, 2004 01:08 PM

You know Dawn, William Buckley had a book some years ago called "Nearer My God" about his role. The editors wanted to call it "Why I am still a Catholic." Buckley responded that was like saying "Why I am still a Whig".

So, yes, I am a Catholic.

Like Buckley, no I am not "still a Catholic."

Baptists are jealous of us Catholics b/c we can gamble and drink.

Posted by: Zach at July 19, 2004 01:40 PM

Dawn, all Jews. Isn't that what you think too? And I quote: 'the reason I want my future husband to be Catholic is I don't want to be looking down from heaven at him in hell'.

Posted by: Karol at July 19, 2004 02:14 PM

Michael is correct about Luther and the Reformation being the begining of Protestantism.

Von Bek is also 'right on' about a lot of what is said, but I believe some of the attitude heard from Baptists in the south reflects more on their southerness than their Baptistness. Since I spent three years or so there among the "blessedly stubborn", I heard a lot of the same language.

And, regretably, too many Christians fail to understand that many Catholics base their belief of their personal salvation on the same principals as do they. The good news is others don't have that blind spot.

This from a Jew :)
The 144,000 are the remnant who will be left behind with many Christians, and other Faiths. After the rapture those who do not believe that Christ is the Son of God will be left behind to fight the antichrist along with the other followers.

Those who during the 7 Years of the tribulation do not accept Christ either day in one of the tribulation trials, or are sent to hell on the day of the glorious appearing. The 144,000 and others are the evangelists who resist the anticrhist and spread the word of god to others but not the only ones who are saved.

I told my wife not to worry until there is a day when we wake up and every devout Christian we know has disappeared off the face of the earth I am still a Jew. :)
