Rebuild the same?

I'm not sure what I think of this idea, to rebuild the Twin Towers 'exactly the same shape and position they were before, only taller, stronger and shifted 300 feet East of their original positions.' For a long time after 9/11, I longed for the skyline to return to its familiar shape and wondered about a plan to rebuild the towers in some form, even if they were built hollow and only there to commemorate the original ones. Now, I think homage can be paid by not rebuilding them as they were, allowing that design to die with the people in them and be committed to memory. What do my New York readers think?

I still miss the towers in the skyline. I find the downtown skyline still a bit alien without the towers.

But, it makes no sense to rebuild them. No one in their right mind would ever want to work there.

Look, I know I'm not a New Yorker, but my point was, in a sense, the WTC belonged to all Americans and we all suffer from their loss.

It seems to me that one of three things can be done: you can turn the site into a small museum or memorial area, or rebuild the WTC in some small way, or you can bring the towers back, bigger and stronger and more defiant than ever.

I vote to rebuild them.

You really should visit the site and look at the model and plans, regardless.

At first I wanted them to rebuild the Towers but then decided it's a bad idea. No matter how precise the plans, they would never look exactly the same as before and I think that would just give them an eerie feel.
There needs to be a new skyscraper though. The skyline looks so empty without them (and now I'm always disoriented downtown because I can't tell which way is south anymore).

The proposed Freedom Tower, by the way, looks ugly.

I am a big fan of the new and final design: one tower, but 10 floors higher. It strikes the right compromise of letting go of the past, honoring the dead, and sticking it to the terrorists.

I agree with Peter and Dorian. I want the skyline restored but don't need it to be a replica of the original towers. Rebuilding it bigger and better than before is the way I want to do it.
I think the Freedom Tower is the best out of the proposed plans.

I'd like to see them back just as they were but instead of the top 20 floors or so, some pyrex or other "indesctructible" glass that would catch and reflect light all day as a memorial of some sort. Not as the only memorial - not replacing the one on the ground, just a separate but equal one ;)

The new design, by the way, is goddawful. Offensively ugly.

as long as it is the tallest building in the world i don't care what they do.

cube, they weren't the tallest buildings in the world when they fell...

I desperately want them rebuilt more or less as they were. Maybe a little taller. Certainly a little safer and with a memorial incorporated into it. The current design bothers me because it is so much latice and so little building. Of the final proposals the one that I most liked (by a very wide margin) was the United Architects proposal ( http://www.cnn.com/interactive/us/0212/wtc.site.rebuild/content.5.1.html ) . Nevertheless, that was a distant second to rebuilding the Towers. As for who'd work in them, I would. In an instant.

Actually after looking at them just now, I like this on the best.
