Some connections are just more interesting to our press than others.
Headline: Bush campaign lawyer tied to anti-Kerry ads
I must've missed this one: Kerry group lawyer joins Saddam's defense team
Via Blogs of War.

1) How do you go from "Anti-Vietnam War crazy guy who helped ideologically similar and politically similar Vietnam Veteran's Against the War--in the early 70's" to "Kerry Group Lawyer" without qualification?
I mean, the way you put it, it sounds like he was working on Kerry's campaign or something. Especially since you contrast it with the PRESENT Bush campaign lawyer illegally participating in the PRESENT controversial ads. If you really think that's a sign of media bias, you're smoking something crazy.
2) Is it even notable that Ramsey Clark would be defending Saddam Hussein? First, are you saying there's something immoral about defending anybody in any legitimate court? It's a necessary aspect of modern justice... Second, why would the fact that Ramsey Clark, of all people, is doing it be terribly noteworthy? He's exactly the person everybody would've expected to do it.
So yes. Some connections are more interesting to our press than others: because some are illegal, some are prescient, and some are actually surprising.
Posted by: Andrew at August 25, 2004 01:41 AMI don't know. I think obtuse reports and comparisons of this nature are best left to those blogs, websites or newspapers that are hopelessly mired in conservative ideology.
Posted by: Rick at August 25, 2004 08:21 AMI was going to comment on the substance of this, but Andrew and Rick pretty much nailed it right on the head.
Karol, sometimes you make credible points, but then you lose whatever credibility you have by either (1) posting something like this; (2) making a really broad general comment about liberals and/or dems that only applies to the extremes but that you apply to all (yes, I know 90% of the blog and talk show world does this, but that doesn't make it intelligent or salient); (3) make a personalized attack (yes, you and Rick bring this out in each other, so I may be over generalizing there, but I just base it on what I have observed); or (4) simply not responding when someone responds with a very detailed and point-by-point refutation, except to do 1, 2 or 3.
Something for you to think about. I think you have some good ideas, but you get blinded by partisanship, the "game" and scoring "points" (along the lines Rick rightfully complains about what modern politics has become) and just not thinking things through critically before posting.

Posted by: Karol at August 25, 2004 02:35 PMWhat apology? You're just linking to another blogger making a different (but still spurious)connection -- and one that WAS reported by the media at that.
Personally, I'm more interested in your reaction to THIS story:
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/5818634/
And/or this segment from last night's Aaron Brown:
O'Neill said no one could cross the border by river and he claimed in an audio tape that his publicist played to CNN that he, himself, had never been to Cambodia either. But in 1971, O'Neill said precisely the opposite to then President Richard Nixon.
O'NEILL: I was in Cambodia, sir. I worked along the border on the water.
NIXON: In a swift boat?
O'NEILL: Yes, sir.
(END VIDEOTAPE)
JOHNS: Now, O'Neill may have an explanation for this but he has not returned CNN's calls. What does seem clear is that a top member of the swift boat group is now being held to the same standard of literal accuracy they've tried to impose on John Kerry -- Aaron.

Posted by: Rick Blaine at August 25, 2004 03:29 PMIn fact, there is a lawyer for the Kerry campaign (Bauer) who is also acting as counsel to America Coming Together - the 527 aiming to get out the vote by, among other things, putting together concerts with aging rock bands. The NY Times gives this story a mention in one paragraph of the various stories it has done on Ginsberg's resignation today. Is it simply media bias? Maybe - but I think the problem is the failure of the media to explain why the stories are treated differently. I suspect that the roles of Bauer and Ginsberg really aren't comparable, but who can be certain given the sparse amount of coverage?
