Funniest thing I've heard in awhile
'So, you guys aren't like out here trying to convert people, are you?'
-A guy who had the misfortune of meeting me, Jessica, Lisa and Peter, the four most Republican-leaning (Lisa and Peter aren't totally on the trolley yet) people at an otherwise almost entirely liberal party.
His friend, who I thought we got along with but I guess I was wrong, had told him that we were some cult-ish bunch of conservatives trying to change people. Oy, I wish.

Jews for Jesus ... Jews for Bush. What's the difference? ;)
Posted by: Joe Grossberg at September 17, 2004 01:29 PMsome liberals never cease to amaze.
Posted by: Jessica at September 17, 2004 01:39 PMThey just don't understand the path. Just follow the path and you'll see the light. Feel the warmth from the light.
Posted by: Lisa at September 17, 2004 02:15 PMI was going to ask about the black robes and the goats' heads at the film festival, but I thought, "Nahhhhh..."
Posted by: Shawn at September 17, 2004 03:51 PMIt's a refreshing change from the usual "Nazi, fascist" tripe the libs usually bandy about.
Posted by: Texas Tom at September 17, 2004 04:06 PMin the world of liberalism, any Republican is the most extreme Republican walking the face of the earth.
Posted by: Jeffery Blanco at September 17, 2004 04:47 PMAnd the Republican fantasy about Liberals is that we're all soft and flabby and talk like the announcers on All Things Considered. Here's an example from a couple of posts down on this blog:
"Bitter Pills to Swallow- Ralph is one of those people that I can't believe is a liberal...."
Actually, though, I have no trouble spotting moderate Republicans. They're the ones with the adhesive tape over their mouths that gets removed only when they are trotted out to speak at the Presidential Convention.
We have a lot of them here in Ohio, one of whom is Senator George Voinovich. Back when GWB wanted to pass his spendthrift budget, and Voinovich opposed it, Karl Rove and the boys mounted an absolutely savage TV commercial campaign against him here.
He hasn't taken the adhesive tape off since, and all the other Ohio Republicans have been very, very quiet about GWB when they aren't actually in a rally with him. It's a "two cheers for the President" sort of support, actually.
I'm on the ground here in Ohio, involved in getting out the Democratic vote.
If we take this state, and I think we just might, you can probably blame it on what George W. did to poor old George V.
Soft and flabby that.

Or if the Dems win Ohio, we can "blame" it on those folks getting the vote out. It works either way.
Posted by: Shawn at September 17, 2004 10:37 PMHey, Shawn, if you knew how hard it is to elect ANY Democrat in this state, you would see at once that the two explanations are not nearly equivalent.
We've had the slickest Republican graft machine running here since the days of Mark Hanna (the Boss of Cincinnati who definitely DIDN'T want Teddy Roosevelt to get anywhere near the Presidency, so Hanna got him made Vice President--a political dead end in those days).
Posted by: Joseph Marshall at September 17, 2004 10:44 PMJoseph, if the Republicans have such a hold on Ohio, why do they keep electing wishy-washy Republicans like your man George V? Why not put up some real conservatives?
Posted by: Karol at September 18, 2004 12:03 AMWell, Karol, the proof of the pudding is in the eating. We generally elect Republicans here, and have done all the way back to the Civil War, BECUASE they are moderate and pragmatic.
The state HAS been dominated by the Republican Party since time out of mind. Our current governor, Robert Taft, is the son of Robert Taft, the Ohio Republican Senator, the grandson of Robert Taft, the Ohio Republican senator (the best of them, really--Eisenhower defeated him in the '52 primary), and the great-grandson of President Willam Howard Taft! Even the Bushies don't go back that far.
We have our share of wingnuts here just like anywhere else but the boys in the Super 100's worsted wool suits have always kept them under control, which is why they win elections.
Posted by: Joseph Marshall at September 18, 2004 09:02 AMAleceste said the very same thing about you last week. You are some kind of cult leader.
Stop stealing my trolley.
