Random Snopes Surfing
I was looking for information on a rumor that Sean Connery once said that sometimes women need to be slapped (I don't believe he said it, but I didn't find anything one way or another), I came across a friend of mine in a Snopes story. I think that's kind of cool.

The remark made by Connery wasn't a rumour in the UK, it was major news in the UK (probably about 8 - 10 years ago). Indicitive of his generation and (working class Edinburgh) background more than anything. I seem to recall Bond not being averse to calming the odd hysterical woman down with the occaisional slap. Not defending what he said, but I don't think he was advocating wife beating or anything.

The original interview is here. It is over 30 years old, and was predictably blown out of all proportion when it hit the headlines all those years later.

His comments did not lead me to conclude that he was either a woman-hater, or wife-abuser. I believe he was talking about male self-defense against abusive women (again - uncertain).

so do some men, kids, dogs, and cats.
every living thing in the world could use a good beating everyonce and awhile.
Posted by: cube at September 26, 2004 03:06 PMYes, I remember the controversy too. Sean said it in an interview with Walters. Big Deal, he is of my father's generation who say things like that. I don't think he slaps women around, but who knows? If he does then SLAP him back!
Geeze! We are so sensitive!
I disagree with the idea that women "need to be slapped." Adults shouldn't have to resort to that kind of behavior to get their points across.

So, no need for a war in Iraq then ? Just how far does your faith in human nature extend ?
Come on, the article was from Playboy in 1965. What do you exepct? Feminism wasn't mainstream by then... not that Sean would have cared.
Lisa, you should thank your liberal stars for changing our culture to the point that it's no longer acceptable to even have said such things.
