Things I love about Colorado, so far.
1. My host family makes the best coffee I've ever had.
2. They also happen to be wine lovers who share. Bonus.
3. I love Wal-mart. I know I've covered this on previous trips out into America but I don't know how New York survives without it. The upper east side could use a Wal-mart. I know Target lovers are going to pitch their store but while Target is cooler, Wal-mart has everything. I got my film developed and keys made while I went food shopping and thought about buying a down jacket (they didn't have my size. That's actually another benefit of being outside of NY, instead of all the clothes in the store being a size 0 and too small for me, they're all size 16 and too big for me.)
4. I'm going to see the president twice next week.
5. The mountains. My gosh, have you seen the mountains?
6. It's a swing state. I've never spent any time in a swing state before. There are Bush or Kerry signs everywhere and bumper stickers on every car. I haven't watched any tv yet but I'm told political commercials are on all the time.
7. It looks like I will get to meet the writers of Protein Wisdom, Vodkapundit and Bond Girl, among other Colorado bloggers, at some point in the not too far off future.
8. I like Pete Coors. I've only met him once so far but he seemed so down to earth. I just have a feeling that if I asked him why he was running, he wouldn't tell me 'well, I've always ran for things. I ran for office in grade school and again in high school and during college'. I'm not mentioning any names on who I'm quoting there. Pete is going to be on 'Meet the Press' on Sunday so be sure to watch.

Cool.
Perhaps I'll have to change my preconceived notion of Colorado...
Posted by: Kearns at October 5, 2004 06:41 AMNRO has an article on CO's electoral college referendum this morning-which way are the local winds blowing on that, Karol?

Karol, do you think the guy who made this statement will win his latest race ?
Posted by: Von Bek at October 5, 2004 09:35 AMGlad you are a fan of Wal-Mart. Me too.
Do you know how to get mustard off suede??? Totally off the subject, I know. Figure you have such a large readership, perhaps someone can give me some advice.
I still don't understand what you like about Pete Coors, Karol. Is it:
***his homophobic support of second-class citizenship for LGBT Americans?
***his staunch support of the rights of convicted murderers to have unlimited firepower and cop-killer bullets?
***his family's long history of support for the John Birch Society and the KKK?
Seriously---why do you support this guy?
Posted by: Don Myers at October 5, 2004 10:51 AMDon....do you know, how to get mustard off suede?
Posted by: Vanessa at October 5, 2004 11:07 AMSuck it out with your mouth.
Posted by: Dawn Summers at October 5, 2004 11:11 AMDon,
1. Salazar is also against gay marriage as are your two Democrat senators from NY. Hypocrisy much?
2. No idea which myth this refers to.
3. Of course, this is completely false.
And, sorry, no idea how to get mustard off suede.
Posted by: Karol at October 5, 2004 11:13 AMWould gently using some sort of stiff brush on the suede work, providing said mustard spot is dry?
Posted by: Shawn at October 5, 2004 11:23 AMyes Sean, the mustard is dry. It's a small spot. Do you think a dry toothbrush would work? A co-worker suggested that earlier.
Posted by: Vanessa at October 5, 2004 11:29 AMdry cleaners, man. spend the money and do it soon.
i only wanted to comment on number 5: yes, i have, and yes, you start to realize why so many people used to worship them or still do.
you should stay after the campaign and con someone into driving you into southern utah. it's not long, and the drive itself will wow you. if you're loving this stuff, i can't wait until you see moab...
Posted by: candace at October 5, 2004 11:29 AMI would try the dry toothbrush, Vanessa.
Also, some of the most gorgeous scenery I've ever seen was in upstate New York in Ellicottsville (sp?) near Buffalo. That was up in the Catskills, I think.
Posted by: Shawn at October 5, 2004 11:32 AMHow could you leave out the truly greatest thing about Colorado ? No, not Earl Dodge and the Prohibition Party. I'm talking Stan, Kyle, Cartman, Kenny, Tweek, Mr. Hat, Chef....
Posted by: Von Bek at October 5, 2004 11:38 AMKarol--
The mountains are definitely amazing. If you get a chance to sightsee here are a couple of recommendations:
Georgetown, CO
Loveland Pass (both are west of Denver)
Rocky Mountain National Park
Of course, depending on snow levels, the last two might not be accessible.
Enjoy your stay. I'm jealous :)
Dear Karol:
1. Who said that I supported Salazar? Or Clinton, or Schummer, for that matter. I certainly never said anything of the kind. Stupidly assume much?
The question you're ineffectually ducking is why YOU are on the payroll of a man who is against equal rights for all Americans?
2. Did your guy reputiate the NRA while I wasn't watching? Did he come out in favor of background checks at gun shows, or a national gun control database?
3. Okay...maybe not LITERALLY true. I am prone to hyperbole sometimes. Let me re-phrase the question: Do you support him because of his family's long history of support for militant right-wing hate groups?
"The Coors Foundation gave $2500 in 1981 to the ultra-rightist Patriotic American Youth, Inc., a group which also distributes explicitly racist literature. The masthead of their related publication mailed from Jackson, Mississippi included names of figures active in the segregationist Citizen's Councils and the Ku Klux Klan. Also active with the group was Judge Tom Brady, whose efforts inspired the formation of the segregationist Citizen's Councils in the 1950's to oppose the 1954 Supreme Court decision striking down the concept of separate but equal in Brown v. Board of Education" (Bellent, R. THE COORS CONNECTION South End Press, 1991 p. 72).

4. BONUS QUESTION: Do you think his proposal to lower the drinking age to 18 might have just a little bit to do with lining his own pockets?
Posted by: Don Myers at October 5, 2004 01:40 PMOh...and I have no idea how to get mustard off of suede. It sponges right off pleather, though
Posted by: Don Myers at October 5, 2004 01:41 PM1. So, people just shouldn't work for politicians at all, anywhere, because no one supports gay marriage?
2. I love the NRA and am a member. Gun rights are in my top 5 of issues important to me.
3. More nonsense. If the most you can find to is a $2500 check to some random group over 20 years ago, you really should stop throwing around disgusting accusations.
4. I'm for lowering the drinking age. If you can vote, drive and die for your country, I think it's ok to have some wine. And, unfortunately, I don't own a Karol Brewery, or something.
Posted by: Karol at October 5, 2004 01:48 PM1. Wal-Mart will kick Targets ass any day. Wal-Mart will NEVER move into New York City because the commercial real-estate prices combined with distribution problems kill profit margins. (Hell, look at K-mart's sad attempts in the city)
2. Don, in a state like Colorado, you just wouldn't be able to support anyone because of the gay issue. Also, you're going to judge Pete by his the family's former contributions? I guess you could also judge him by the company's progressive stance on benefits for gay couples... (yes, I'm quite aware the Coors Company does NOT support Pete Coors)
3. The drinking age should be 16. Not 18. And definitely not 21.
4. Why isn't the IMPORTANT issue being addressed here ... That being, how could you associate yourself with such a shitty beer as Coors Light?
Posted by: ken at October 5, 2004 01:57 PMWell, thank you all for your stain fighting advice. I have stopped relentlessly obsessing about it. I will take it to my dry cleaners tonight, as he does do suede cleaning.
And K, don't get yourself mixed up in that PHISH-band scene. They are a big deal in Colorado.
Posted by: Vanessa at October 5, 2004 02:34 PMDinosaur National Monument is not that far from Denver. It's good, if you liked that sort of thing. You see dinosaur bones in the rocks.
Posted by: PAUL at October 5, 2004 03:02 PMFirst...Coor Light is not a shitty Beer! If you it was the only beer around, I am sure you would drink it. Besides what Beer do you drink?
Second, Coors Brewery DOES support Pete, just not his stance on homosexual marriage. Really...was this what God intended? Because if it was NONE OF US WOULD BE HERE!
Third, ever heard of the Heritage Foundation, Club For Growth? Enough said. Check to see who their major supporters are!
Fourth, Bet you when you have more money in your pocket, because Pete votes to make the Bush tax cuts permanent, I bet you will be out buying shitty beers left and right.
Fifth, Pete would be great for this country as a US Senator.
Posted by: G-Man at October 5, 2004 05:10 PMGod blessed Abraham impregnating two different women, Jacob having... what 13 wives?, Lot having sex with his daughters and Jesus was celibate...so you down with the polygamy, incest and/or lifetime celibacy?
Posted by: Dawn Summers at October 5, 2004 05:27 PMFirst...Coor Light is not a shitty Beer! If you it was the only beer around, I am sure you would drink it. Besides what Beer do you drink?
Shiner Bock.
Fourth, Bet you when you have more money in your pocket, because Pete votes to make the Bush tax cuts permanent, I bet you will be out buying shitty beers left and right.
No, I'll be buying Shiner Bock. ;)

Come on Dawn. Abraham and Jacob lived before the law was established in the later books of Moses. Lot's daughters got him drunk before they slept with him.
I am glad you admit that Jesus was celibate, too many have followed the blasphemies of "Holy Blood, Holy Grail" and "The DaVinci Code" which is totally ripped off from the first mentioned book. However Jesus states in Matthew 19 that not all of us should be celibate but there are others who are celibate for religious reasons.
Go to Boulder Falls. I went in January and it was amazing... and frozen. It's best to do so after touring the Coors Brewery (which does make more than just Coors Light), so you're a little more numb to the cold.
Wal-Mart is hit-or-miss. In my hometown it's a decent place to find whatever you need. But the closest one to me in Austin is a ghetto hell-hole.
Posted by: Drew at October 5, 2004 06:02 PMyes yes yes. boulder falls is a must.
