Don't get it.

Michele missed the last debate and so was lost on the Internets/Wood jokes. I saw the debate and still have no clue what Kerry was saying with the Red Sox reference. Here it is:

KERRY: Boy, to listen to that — the president, I don’t think, is living in a world of reality with respect to the environment.

Now, if you’re a Red Sox fan, that’s OK. But if you’re a president, it’s not.

Any ideas?

Red Sox fans are not living in a world of reality--because they won't win. The Red sox comet only comes once every 100 or so years.

it will take much more nuanced and complex minds than ours to decipher this bit of wisdom.

though i like jc's explanation.

Well the Red Sox fans do live in an illusionary world. Every season, they are convinced this is their season. Every playoffs, they are convinced this is their time (I for one will be watching the Sox Yankees series this week with great interest).

Now let us compare that to the Cubs fan. The Cubs fan is not illusioned; no they revel in their cynicism. The Cubs have not won a World Series in a century either. But the Cubs fan is convinced that his team sucks and that bad things will happen to the team, like last year's meltdown against the Marlins.

The Red Sox fan is angry and upset over Grady Little leaving Pedro in too long. The Cubs fan is convinced the Bartman incident is part of their horrible fate and accept it willingly.

Major League Baseball uses wooden bats, which requires trees to die, and is therefore bad for the environment.

The PRESDIENT OF THE UNITED STATES made a corny joke on national telivsion.

"Need some wood?"

That is so american, it makes me tear up.

And did anyone notices that as soon as John Kerry mentions people who support stem cell reseach they die.

Hmmmmmm......

Below the belt, cube.

I thought I got the joke, and I guess I did if JC is right. But unlike Bush's lame but spontaneous wood joke that got genuine if not enthusiastic laughter, this one achieved only silence.

Kerry's attempt at baseball humor: swing and miss.

One side issue: Kerry is from Massachusetts, home of the Boston Red Sox. Presumably, he's a fan; most everyone in this neck of the woods who isn't actually from New York is. So, is he saying that it's ok for him to not live in reality?
