Making Eliot Spitzer the happiest man in all New York
Chuck Schumer has agreed to head the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee thus giving up a run for Governor of New York in 2006.
Actually, maybe Giuliani is the happiest man in all New York. It's too close to call.

I think Spitzer is a much more formidable candidate than Schumer. This is very good news for him.

check your voice mail. important things to discuss.
Oh, Spitzer is happier. I saw an article on Spitzer's and Schumer's relative war chests and it probably made Spitzer queasy. And the commercials Schumer was running for his "Senate campaign" also probably kept Spitzer awake at night.
Posted by: ugarte at November 15, 2004 03:22 PMI totally disagree, Von Bek. No one raises money like Chuckie. If it was Schumer v. Giuliani, or Spitzer v. Giuliani, I know Rudy prefers the latter.
Posted by: Karol at November 15, 2004 03:39 PMI grant you that Schumer can raise funds. So can Phil Gramm, John Conally and Howard Dean.
Schumer is very much a creature of Washington which Spitzer is not. I think Schumer also comes off as more of a New York Cityit than Spitzer does (despite Spitzer's Manhattan roots). I think Spitzer may be able to reach out to other voters, including those upstate, perhaps better than Schumer can.
I think Rudy is the only hope the NY GOP has against Spitzer. I think Joe Bruno is a total flop (just because you are a legislative boss, does not mean voters like you), Randy Daniels is a nobody, Peter King is a bit too combustable (and oh yeah, he is one of the IRA's favorite Congressmen). I guess John Sweeny is the fallback. But man, it's Rudy or bust.
And that does not even take into account the Hillary factor in 2006.
Posted by: Von Bek at November 15, 2004 03:49 PMJohn Sweeney? That no-necked lowlife? The one with 10 zillion skeletons in his closet? Spitzer can only be so lucky if the Rethuglicans pick Sweeney.
Posted by: LOL at November 15, 2004 10:44 PMI think most people on here know a lot more about New York politics than I do, but I'm really surprised that anyone thinks Rudy or Hillary are going to run for Governor of NY in '06. First Giuliani: Why on earth would he do it? It at best seems a lateral move. I don't want to open the can of worms of whether or not he's going to run for President and whether or not that's a possibility, but I just don't see him locking himself into a 6-year Governor term, whatever it is he wants to do next. And Hillary is almost certainly going to run for President. I'm sure there's something I'm completely missing here, but I always thought the only question was whether it would be Schumer or Spitzer on the Democratic side. On the Republican side, there's no one who could possibly win against either one but Rudy (who might not even be able to do it) and I really don't see him running.
Posted by: Eric Deamer at November 16, 2004 12:03 AMSorry Eric. I did not mean to imply that Hillary is running for gov in 2006. But she is up for 6 more years. With her disciples all ready to put her in the White House in 2008, she will win, win big, spend a lot and have serious coat tails.
Posted by: Von Bek at November 16, 2004 08:47 AMI see Giuliani making the run. I don't know if he wants to run for president but you really can't do that as an ex-mayor. I don't think he has a shot at the presidency (due to his positions on abortion and gay marriage) but he certainly has a good shot at the governorship.
