Now, that's a man.

Bill Clinton would never have done that. He would have pretended to not what was going on and would have kept on smiling while back-slapping any head of state that was standing near him. And if he did see what was going on, he would have been a coward and continued to go inside and later claim that he always knew that the Chileans and Secret Service would have figured out a way somehow.
Bush is a man. It wasn't a big deal what he did but it spoke volumes of what kind of person he is.
Wow.
Posted by: Beka at November 20, 2004 10:17 PMThats an awesome story. It's good to know that we have such a person as president.
Posted by: Amanda at November 20, 2004 10:36 PMI marvel at this man.
Posted by: Dorian at November 21, 2004 07:07 AMAnd he didn't have to take "Alpha Male" lessons from Donna Brazille!
Posted by: matt at November 21, 2004 10:35 AM"My President can beat up your President. Neener-neener-neeeeeeener."
(It was either that or some variation on "that son-of-a-bitch knocked me down," but I couldn't convert on that one.)
Posted by: Jeff Harrell at November 21, 2004 11:57 AMHuh?!?
Let me get this straight. The President is down in Chile and on his way into something Chilean security cuts off his Secret Service guys. Naturally the Secret Service guys don't like this and do their best to get through. President notices, comes back and says "hey, these guys are with me." Chilean security knows that pushing around Secret Service guys on Chilean turf is one thing, but that telling the President of the U.S. to shove is something else they let the President have his way.
So? What the hell does that demonstrate? I completely fail to understand why anyone views this as some sort of extraordinary act that means anything.

Ask you self this question. Does bush know his secrect service agents by name?
If they answer to that question is yes, then i would supsect that you might have greater insight into this story.
if the answer to that question is no, then this story makes not sense what so ever.
Bush went back to make sure the man pledged to save his life was with him and doing the job he wanted to do.
Was it out of selfish motives, because he wanted to guy who is supposed to protect him there, or is it because he actually wanted to help on of his friends in need.

Posted by: cube at November 21, 2004 05:41 PMSignor, Bush could've gotten someone else to do it. He's freaking president. He doesn't have to do jack. But, instead of waiting around for someone else to handle it, he handled it himself. There are people who wait for someone to 'do something' and there are those that act. It just says something about the man, and I like it.
Posted by: Karol at November 21, 2004 05:42 PMHe probably could have asked the President of Chili to intervene, but that isn't him. He stood up for a man pledged to protect him. He saw something wrong and moved to deal with it. It is pure W, see problem and then fix problem. He could have whined and demanded someone else fix it, but that just isn't him. See a pattern?
Posted by: Scott at November 21, 2004 08:15 PMSimply wonderful. Bravo, Bush.
Posted by: Lena G. at November 22, 2004 09:24 AMContrast this with the story of an agent bumping into John Kerry while Snow boarding and Kerry called him a son-of-a-bitch. When push comes to shove the President cares about the people who swear an oath to protect him.
Posted by: Michael C at November 22, 2004 12:05 PMIt is amazing to me that you people will go to great lenghths to read heroism or compassion into a simple and unremarkable act, but refuse to see the callous disdain evident in scores of policies that harm the people he swore an oath to protect.
Were all of your childhoods so lacking in appropriate father figures that you need to worship this man at all costs?
Posted by: Rick Blaine at November 22, 2004 05:36 PMoh my god I just have to pitty that you have such a retard as president by doing something like that he knows he is going to embarrass the host nation. And what would you rather have an embarrassed SS or a embarrassed host nation. (Definately seeing he was in no danger what so ever) It just goes to show that he doesn't know anything about diplomacy.
And to make matters worse he refused to go to a dinner held in his honour because he made the demand that all the attendees go through a metal detector. He must really think he is king of the world.
Furthermore I definately expect this to be a failure of your state department and SS for failing to give proper instructions to each other and the Chilians regarding protocol.
You have it all wrong people. You should try to inform yourselves better before commenting. That wasn't what happened.
Bush was here in Chile for the APEC along with 20 other presidents, including Vladimir Putin. This situation was during a ceremony held in a cultural center in our capital, and security had determined that every president could go with only one security guard and not more, because they couldn't have the place crowded. Every other president did that, but Bush had to be his usual arrogant self and went there with 6 security guards.
Of course the chilean policemen couldn't allow that and that's why they stopped them at the entrance. Why should George Bush have privileges over the other presidents? The US Security Agents were the ones who tried to break through and started pushing around. They didn't even care about Chile's policies, they just had to do what they wanted.
When Bush noticed the commotion, he went back to fetch Nick Trotta, and I hope I don't have to explain who that is to you. In the end, he went inside with just one agent (Trotta) just like it should be.
Chile's President didn't do a thing because he didn't allow Bush to come here and change things around. The rules were stated, it was Chile's business to control security and he certainly doesn't care that Bush thinks he's the king of the world.
The same happened later, when they were going to have the dinner celebration. Bush wanted every guest to go through the metal detector, and Lagos (Chile's President) said no. They were his guests, and he wouldn't make them go through that. You don't like it, Mr. Bush? So sorry, but this isn't your country, see?
So before you start praising him for his "brave" attitude, you should consider his arrogant nature first.
How do I know this? I was there, so I saw it with my own eyes.
Posted by: A Chilean at November 25, 2004 11:35 PMu were there? that's a lot of big talk from someone on the internet. welp, im bush's dog barney. cant prove it to ya cause were online, but hey, were online..you'll believe anything.
the fact that you were there doesnt mean jack, its not bush who said "i want six agents" it was the SS that wanted that, and bush didnt tell them "no.". the SS know what they need to protect the president of the united states, and unless bush says outright, "NO!". then they go with their plans that they see fit.
it doesnt matter what happened, it was the gesture that he did by going back to fish his lead agent for the night out of that shoving match.
not kerry, not clinton, certainly not hilary would have done the same cause they just dont care about their agents who are swarn to protect them.
bush actually holds a lot of respect for his agents, and that a good thing.
