The White House press herd doesn't care about the news, doesn't care about Americans and doesn't care about Bush.
All they care about is getting gotchas no matter how trivial.
As a consequence, Bush treats them like the pond scum they are. And that is one of the reasons Bush is popular with the American people.
If they were as respectful and marshmallowy with Bush as they were with Clinton and Carter, the press herd would be treated differently.

Regardless of whether you think they ended up writing ass-kissing articles (I hardly think they did, but it is besides the point), they made his press reps dance.
