How dare those stupid rubes vote against our guy?

This sign is in the window of a store called Fishs Eddy on the Upper West Side. It was sent to me by reader Randy, who I had the pleasure of meeting last night. When the store clerk was asked whether the sign was saying what it seemed to be saying, the clerk replied 'the election didn't went the way it was supposed to':

I actually really like their stuff but you know I'm never buying anything from them again. Involving politics in a non-political setting is the best way to lose customers.

I would like to call for an international truce on quoting people out of context. I can't decide which is stupider: Finding some vague Hilter quote and comparing it to Bush, or finding quotes about evil and ignorance by men who shared many of the values of people you're calling evil and ignorant. This is a good example of that, but it's probably a close second to Barbara Streisand's post-election quotation of Thomas Jefferson, a Republican.

Dorian,

Jefferson was a Democrat.

KipEsquire--

Go back and take a look at that link you provided. Jefferson's party is described as the "anti-federalist" party. He opposed federalism. In fact, his whole platform for the election of 1800 was that federalists like John Adams were centralizing government so profoundly that we were backsliding into a monarchy. His victory in 1800 is called his "Second Revolution" because it solidified the values of the original revolution of 1776: a democratic republic, with a decidely small federal government, rooted in states' rights. He was a Republican.

lol - Jefferson was a Democratic - Republican. There were no Democrat *and* Republican parties at that time.

As far as Jefferson's values go - in today's terms, he's more Republican because he believes in small central government. Democrats tend to go for a larger (socialist or federalist-type) central government. But that is just one leg of a much larger platform. I'd have to investigate more to see where he falls upon other legs.

Some people should read what they quote before quoting (part of) it... ;)

The sign has been taken down. Dare I christen this episode, "Eddygate", "Edscam?" Karol, giant slayer, you have humbled the nefarious plate purveyor and made it safe for me to once again walk the streets (well not, you know, walk the streets) of my neighborhood. Your name is certain to be mentioned in the same breath as those legends LGF, INDC and Powerline. On behalf of myself and the 3 other guys on the UWS who would have taken offense to this sign I thank you for your service in the name of justice and all that is right.

ps, Charlie says if you get rich and famous because of this you owe him a million bucks for the photographic rights, but I think he can be talked down.

Not buying things you like because of the political stupidity of the owners seems like... well, maybe it's beneath us.

How many times have I had to eat Pizza Hut because the girls at work won't order Dominos (pro-life, supposedly)?

When I saw Ben & Jerry speak at Penn and heard their faux socialism first hand, I resolved to stop eating their ice cream. That lasted a week, because I realized I was only hurting myself.

Lots of people make ice cream. Never tried B & J never will. Nothing to do with their moronic political stance. Last I checked their crap is more expensive than normal ice cream.

I just want to know where Dunkin' Donuts and Texas BBQ stand on all this. Priorities people...

the above comment was I; Ari.

It reminds me of a Mac software company that actually had a good product.

After the 2000 election, the president of the company sent monthly emails to his customer list ranting about George Bush.

I sent him a reply saying, "Are you crazy? Only Republicans are smart enough to use your software"

The software company was bankrupt within a year.

Just remember that Ben & Jerry sold out to monolithic Unilever several years ago and the ice cream will go down much more easily for you...

RB, Charlie has got himself a deal. :-)

Posted by: Karol at December 1, 2004 10:33 PM

I wish I didn't care so much about stuff like that.

I can't remember the last time I went to a theatre to see a movie for entertainment because of stuff like this.

I wish I wouldn't stop going to bars when I hear the bartenders (fine upstanding high school dropouts) lauding the brilliance of Michael Moore.

I hate sitting in restaurants and seeing signs "I Hate Ohio".

But if the proprietor is so hell-bent on making sure the public knows his/her views, I don't feel like I've gotta choice.

The Federalists, the party of Washington, Hamilton, and Jat, were not royalists socialists or Democrats. They were conservative nationalists who opposed mob rule.

The Democrat-Republican charge that Adams was a monarchist are as laughable as those of the orgies he held in the White House. However, the charge that Jefferson was a Jacobin had some merit, given the parties he had with toy guillotines as adornements.

I'm really shocked Von Bek has not weighed in here. The comments about our forefathers seems like something he would jump on.

Posted by: Karol at December 2, 2004 07:57 AM

Let me get this straight---you're gonna boycott this store because they are against ignorance?

Ergo, you must be pro-ignorance, right?

Posted by: Don Myers at December 2, 2004 10:01 AM

You got it,Don. I can't believe you guys can't win elections with smarts like that.

Posted by: Karol at December 2, 2004 10:49 AM

Karol,

Thanks for noting that.

I plan to boycott them for their sheer stupidity.
I sent them an e-mail telling them they should be ashamed of themselves. Here we conservatives are in NYC tiptoeing around, trying to make peace with our rabid liberal friends, and they go flinging that stuff in our faces. Who are the bullies here?

Have you seen Kenneth Cole's ad saying "We're for-giving"? Well, it's really patronizing and offensive. If he really wants to make a buck, he should keep his yap closed about politics in his advertising SINCE MORE THAN HALF THE COUNTRY DOESN'T AGREE WITH HIM.

Please don't post my e-mail address, if you do post this.

Keep up the great work!

Jeanette
