Almost like Giuliani, but not

Giuliani most likely recommended Kerik for the job if it was offered to Rudy in the first place.
Giuliani has his sights set on the White House (and rightfully so), Kerik was very supportive of and loyal to the president during the campaign. It's a very good choice.
yes, rudy keep your eye on the whitehouse. no distractions now.
Posted by: dawn at December 2, 2004 11:58 PMHe seems very, what's the word, blue-collar for a cabinet member. Is he the most working-class cabinet member ever, or have there been other precedents? Does anybody know? Von Bek?
Posted by: Yaron at December 3, 2004 10:03 AMThere have been a lot of blue collar Cabinet members before. Martin Durkin, a plumber who worked his way up the ranks of labor, served as Labor Sec. under Ike. James Davis who served at Labor for Harding, Coolidge and Hoover was a steel worker from Wales who moved up the ranks. Nathan Hall, Fillmore's Postmaster General, was like his friend and boss the son of a dirt farmer who lived in upstate NY.
Speaking of Cabinet members, this seems a good a time as any to remind everybody that the poinsetta was invented by Joel Poinset, Matty Van Buren's War Secretary, and a skilled botanist. He was not working class.
Posted by: Von Bek at December 3, 2004 10:17 AMThanks, that was very interesting.
Not to move this thread off-topic, but the word would be "discovered", not "invented", no?
Posted by: Yaron at December 3, 2004 12:49 PMI think he bred it actually
Posted by: Von Bek at December 3, 2004 01:57 PMI remembered something vague about aztecs and poinsettia, so I looked it up. Poinsettias were native to mexico. Poinsett was the first U.S. ambassador to Mexico, and he brought cuttings back to his home upon his return to the U.S. When an English name was given, Poinsett was honored for their "discovery".
