Ad Life

It's probably because I'm a New Yorker, but the Robert DeNiro/American Express commercial makes me feel very sentimental. It shows him walking New York streets and his voice says things like 'my east', 'my far east' (referring to Chinatown), 'my west side'. Then the camera pans to Ground Zero and his voice says 'my heartbreak', then a sign for DeNiro's TriBeCa film festival and his voice says 'my heartbeat'. Martin Scorsese directed the commercial and like most of his movies, it hits all the right notes.

I wonder if good commercials actually help the companies they promote. This commerical doesn't make me want to get an American Express card. Many times I'll see a commercial I like but not remember what brand it was advertising.

You can watch the DeNiro commercial here.

I don't know if it helps the company financially but I do associate American Express with helping to bring business to downtown after 9/11.

I'm pretty sure that the commercial with all the big CEO's saying "I'm staying right here" were also part of the AMEX campaign. They were very inspiring. But I still only hold a VISA and Mastercard.

I liked the Superman/Seinfeld commercials as well. I don't know how much that inspires people to get the card but it def. keeps the name in the positive light.

OMG - I so LOVE that ad. LOVE.

AMEX was the principal sponsor of the Tribeca Film Festival, which is DeNiro's brainchild; so he's probably doing them a favor or something.

I like that commercial because like NYC and DeNiro, AMEX is an American institution. I think that it will do a lot for the TriBeCa Fim Festival to have such illustrious associations. I also love the new AMEX commercial with the surfer in it...I was actually dissapointed that it wasn't a film about it, that is how good it is.
The DeNiro one made both me and my fiance all warm and fuzzy though...and we aren't even New Yorkers...

I saw that commercial for the first time last night and 30 seconds after it was over I couldn't remember what it advertised. But I was talking about it to a couple folks in my office today (and none of us could remember what it advertised).

It was damned good, though.

Great Advertisment. I need to know what song was used in the ad.

It depressses me that DeNiro has chosen a TV commercial to finally reveal something of himself,
especially after his long run of walk-through performances lately (see Parents and Fockers, Analyze This and That, Shark's Tale, etc.). I guess that if Bob Dylan can sell his music to hype overpriced lingerie, nothing's out of bounds.

Yes, great ad, saw just a small piece, but what is the lead-in MUSIC??? I've heard it in toto at least once and it is fascinating. Come on, folks, how do we find this info?

Posted by: Roger at January 13, 2005 08:55 AM

maybe from Kun Dun or some other piece from Philip Glass?

Posted by: Roger at January 13, 2005 09:06 AM

Roger, I was googling the same thing. I've been trying to find outwhat that song is since the first time I saw the commercial.

WHAT'S THAT SONG?

Posted by: Steve at January 23, 2005 08:38 PM

it's from either Glass' Kundun album or the Kronos Album.

Hi. I, too, LOVE the music, it makes me choke up every time I hear it. Just fabulous.

As to what it is, I have a different answer. I called up American Express this morning and spoke with the most excellent Ms. Judy Tenzer in Amex media relations.

She informed me that the music in the "Tribeca" My Life My Card commercial featuring Robert Deniro is indeed by Philip Glass, but is an original composition made specifically for that commercial.

Sorry!! :(

If you want to view the commerical on demand, you can head over to their website. Here's a link:

Perhaps we can petition Philip Glass to record it, and perhaps even expand upon it!
