Don't fall down from surprise
From a blog written by American foreign service officers:
Well, dear friends, we're now into the tenth day of the tsunami crisis and in this battered corner of Asia, the UN is nowhere to be seen -- unless you count at meetings, in five-star hotels, and holding press conferences.Posted by Karol at January 4, 2005 02:03 PM | TrackBackAussies and Yanks continue to carry the overwhelming bulk of the burden, but some other fine folks also have jumped in: e.g., the New Zealanders have provided C-130 lift and an excellent and much-needed potable water distribution system; the Singaporeans have provided great helo support; the Indians have a hospital ship taking position off Sumatra. Spain and Netherlands have sent aircraft with supplies.
The UN continues to send its best product, bureaucrats.

Do not give money to a UN or large European charity unless you want to buy 5 course meals for French speaking bureaucrats holed up in a luxury hotel.
Instead find a small American charity that is fulfilling a special need. Let the governments handle the food problem.
In my own case, I found a Minnesota charity that specializes in southern Thailand-ARC.org.
They have determined that the pressing unmet need there is to replace the fishing boats destroyed by the tsunami.
The fishermen are out of work, and the people cannot buy a staple of their diet. They are using your money to buy new fishing boats for the fishermen.
I gave enough to buy one fishing boat ($500). My fishing boat is going to bring more good to the people of Thailand than 20 UN bureaucrats who are sitting around in the Phuket Yacht Club.
