The downside of name recognition

Rick James.jpg

This photo released by the Rick James Campaign on Monday, April 11, 2005, shows Hattiesburg candidate for City Council Rick James standing besides one of his few remaining and unblemished signs on April 5, 2005, in Hattiesburg, Miss. James, 53, said the novelty of sharing a name with the late 'Super Freak' icon has worn off -- especially when college students started stealing and defacing his campaign signs due to a popular sketch on Comedy Central's 'Chappelle's Show.' James figures he has lost about $600 in campaign signs, either by theft or by defilement. (AP Photo/Rick James Campaign)

That's hilarious. Isn't Rick a dimunitive name for Richard? He could have used Richard instead. But still, damn funny.

Isn't Rick a dimunitive name for Richard?

Nope. Dick is.

So Rick is the full name?

Posted by: Petitedov at April 15, 2005 10:02 AM

Yep.

Don't you mean "derivative"? "Dimuitive" means short, and would apply if a politician were named "Gary Coleman."

No, a diminutive is indeed a shortened version, as Rick is to Richard. Of course, it could also be his birth name, in which case it's just a name, and a diminutive of Rick would be... R?

Derivatives are mutations of names, like Julia spinning-off Julie, or Heinz becoming Heinz Kerry becoming Heinz.

Dick Diminutive. I'd vote for him.

Nope, Rick is not the diminutive of Richard. Dick is.

Steve - :). The dimunitive is shortened name, usually used by close friends/family. A more endearing and casual name than the official one. Example: Robert - Bobby or Rob.
So if Rick is the official full name - than Ricky would be the dimunitive (even though it's longer).
Shawn - also Rich. I still don't understand people who go by Dick.

Hattiesburg is my home town. [sigh] Well, at least they weren't trying to put a racism angle on it...this time.

If he were clever, he would have an event "Have your picture taken with Rick James."

Vote Rick James, bitch!
