Sometimes we just need reminding
Kat points out that today is the anniversary of Columbine and no one seems to have noticed.

ABC's Good Morning America noticed. (I think)
NPR was too busy smoking a bud: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=4607795
Posted by: Kearns at April 20, 2005 09:45 PMYou're right Kearns. GMA noticed with the piece about Rachel's brother making nonviolent films in Panama.
Posted by: dawn at April 20, 2005 10:04 PMBut why is it that we always forget? It reminds me of September 11th in 2004. I don't know if it was because it was Saturday but a lot of people responded to me in shock. "Oh it is September 11th, that's right!"
Posted by: Julien at April 20, 2005 10:51 PMI don't mind people forgetting about Columbine. There is nothing special about socio/psychopaths. But, 9/11 I never want people to forget. That was war.
Posted by: l.l. at April 21, 2005 01:19 AMThe Columbine anniversary was a bigger deal last year 'cause it was 5 years. Milestone anniversaries tend to get more press attention; I don't think any presidents went to the ceremony on the 9th anniversary of the OKC bombing.
Things tend to get lost in the shuffle this time of year, since April 19 and 20 are always the anniversary of Columbine, Waco, Oklahoma City, Hitler's birthday, and "Happy 4:20!
But I'd better not ever forget 9/11- it's my girlfriend's birthday.
Posted by: Steve at April 21, 2005 01:24 AMIf we remembered the anniversary of everything we'd have non-stop anniversaries.
@l.l: umm not realy, no. War is between countries not people. Plus as Xians you are meant to forgive and forget, turn the other cheek, not use a singular event to launch a mass-killing and justify it.
@ Julien: dunno, maybe you don't honestly want to let 2001/09/11 define your life? Maybe 100 years from now the date will be a fun holiday like the 5th November is in the UK?
The 5th November this year is the 400th anniversary of the Gunpowder Plot and I shall be out burning my effigies of Bush and Blair :P
Posted by: Monjo at April 21, 2005 07:30 AMDon't forget early August is the 60 year anniversary of the first Atomic Bomb
Posted by: Shawn at April 21, 2005 09:42 AMMonjo,
1. The events of September 11th were an act of war. It wasn't a criminal act and 'war' is not necessarily defined as being a conflict between two or more countries.
2. 9/11 should not define our lives but we should not forget about it either. After just 3 years, not remembering on the anniversary is just plain ridiculous. And it is not because someone remembers Sept 11th that his life is defined by it. Mine certainly isn't but I can say that I think about it almost everyday. There are just some events in the world that should garner our attention.
"If we remembered the anniversary of everything we'd have non-stop anniversaries."
9/11 wasn't quite just 'everything' or anything.

@Don't lecture me on what you think is my religion or what you think are my religious beliefs. Can you be anymore disingenious?
@It was an act of war. And our response was more than justified.
@Burn away! One can't get any more ineffectual than burning effies. Try not to get singed.
Make that effigies.
Posted by: l.l. at April 21, 2005 10:38 AMJulien: I think about it almost everyday, too.
Posted by: l.l. at April 21, 2005 10:38 AM"Can you be anymore disingenious?"
Yes.
You arent justified. Pursuing bin Laden, fine. Attacking Iraq. Never fine. I hope Blair goes to gaol over it. One day I hope Americans send Bush to be tried by the International War Crimes Court in The Hague.
Posted by: Monjo at April 22, 2005 08:20 AMJim Rome covers the anniversary of Columbine every year. A Pastor from Columbine calls in to Rome's syndicated talk radio show "The Jungle". He talks about church and the importance of the message he delivers on each and every Sunday.
Great Blog here. It is definately going on my list of Blogs that don't suck.
