Wow

The NY Times admits extensive bias in their paper.

You're joking right? You post a blog entry about the NY Times being biased, one entry after saying that "Fox News Rocks".

Fox News is more biased than the NY Times.

I don't mind. I think it's fair to have liberal and conservative media outlets, as the UK press has. But to imply that it's wrong for the NY Times to be biased while saying "Fox News rocks" is a little strange, no?

Didn't the NYT Editor come out and basically admit the paper's bias last year?

How is Fox News conservative? They're pro-American, that's true, but I'm not sure why that's unusual seeing as we live in America. Other than Hannity, who is a conservative on there? Not O'Reilly (I've read both his books, he's definitely not a conservative), not Greta (huge defender of Clinton), not Shep.

How is Fox News conservative?

How is the sky blue?

How is the Pope Catholic?

How did the sun come up this morning?

Posted by: Steve at May 10, 2005 12:35 PM

Well, I can answer all of those but still don't see how Fox is 'conservative'. Again, I'll admit they are definitely 'pro-American'. If that's all it takes to be a conservative (and if that's an admission that liberals aren't pro-American) then fine they're conservative.

Posted by: Karol at May 10, 2005 12:37 PM

It's way right of center.

Which is all fine and dandy with me. I favor news outlets that cover different areas of the political spectrum.

Posted by: Downtown Lad at May 10, 2005 12:40 PM

It's way right of center.

Again, how so?

Posted by: Karol at May 10, 2005 12:40 PM

They rarely criticize this President.

Posted by: Downtown Lad at May 10, 2005 12:47 PM

Is it the job of news organizations to 'criticize' presidents now?

Posted by: Karol at May 10, 2005 12:52 PM

So I guess the premise is that America is conservative, right? And that is the baseline?

Here is apparently the right-to-left political divide: Conservative-America-Centrist-Liberal.

Posted by: ugarte at May 10, 2005 12:52 PM

Ugarte, uh no. My premise is that Fox News is a cheerleader for America and is not at all conservative. When I first got my tv, I was really excited about this conservative tv station I had heard so much about. I watched it and watched it before realizing that there was nothing conservative about it.

Okay, I'll take a stab at this (it shouldn't take quite as long as answering "why is the sky blue"):

The network was created by a lifelong Republican political operative with the express purpose of providing a conservative counterpoint to mainstream news. Indeed, conservative bias is the reason Fox News exists.

The morning show leans way right, as does Cavuto. O'Reilly, while certainly not as doctrinaire as Hannity, is without a doubt more conservative than not- have you seen his show lately? 90% of the stories are about the evils of the "secular left."

"Hannity & Colmes," as you've heard me argue many times, is more of a show trial than a talk show, and while I'll grant you that Greta is no right-winger, she has more of a Laci Peterson bias than any political leanings in either direction.

These are the most-watched programs on the network by far, and while regular news coverage isn't quite as right-heavy as the opinion shows, they do always seem mysteriously synchronized with whatever the Republican talking points are that day.

I do watch Fox quite a bit and find it entertaining. But to deny its inherent conservatism is like denying that the YES Network has a pro-Yankees bias.

Karol - They're cheering the President a lot more often than they are criticizing him.

Maybe you need to watch CNN more often. You get a happy medium when you combine CNN with Fox.

Posted by: Downtown Lad at May 10, 2005 01:00 PM

DL--

The media's job is to be objective, not to "criticize" the president. Objectivity and criticism aren't the same thing.

Posted by: Dorian at May 10, 2005 02:21 PM

Dorian,
Then a "Pro-american" slant would seem to disqualify Fox News from calling itself an "objective" media source.

Posted by: Not Dawn Summers at May 10, 2005 02:38 PM

NDS--

It is objective.

It is not, however, a subscriber to moral relativism like other outlets, such as Reuters News Service, which refused to label Osama bin Laden with the word "terrorist." That's not objective. That's ridiculous.

Posted by: Dorian at May 10, 2005 03:12 PM

Dorian - What's objective? Nobdy's objective. Everybody has their own biases.

Better to make your biases well-known. In Britain, everyone knows The Telegraph is conservative and the Guardian is liberal.

I think Fox News makes it pretty clear that they are right of center. Clear to everyone except Karol! :)

Except for that witty woma, Dawn Summers, who used to comment on here, I think Downtown Lad may be my favorite commenter. HAHAHAHAHHAHA

Posted by: Not Dawn Summers at May 10, 2005 05:18 PM

What's a woma?

Posted by: Shawn at May 10, 2005 09:36 PM

The Guardian liberal?
Liberalism does not mean left-wing. If anything right-wing conservatism is liberalism.

The Guardian is socialist. This is an antithesis to classical liberalism. But you're right, it is better to acknowledge your bias.

In the UK only the BBC (and maybe Channel4) by virtue of their charter as supposed to be objective. The BBC according to most conservatives and right-leaning people would be said as failing that charter.

The thing that puzzles me, having heard this debated on talk radio too, why don't the free enterprise loving, market forces worshipping, young go getting conservatives in NYC, get together, start their own newspaper, and set up a rival to the NYT ?
