First they came for the guns, but I wasn't a gun-owner so I did nothing...
....then they came for the pointy knives.....
Fortunately, this lunacy is not happening in America, it's happening in Britain where they will not rest until law-abiding people are completely defenseless against criminals who will disregard these weapon laws as they disregard the rest.
In the United States, where people are more likely to debate gun control than knife control, partisans on both sides sounded amused. Wayne LaPierre, executive vice president of the National Rifle Association, asked, "Are they going to have everybody using plastic knives and forks and spoons in their own homes, like they do in airlines?"
When Ms. Summers and I have argued over gun-control and I'd say 'what about baseball bats, should we ban those since they can be used as weapons?' she'd roll her eyes and tell me baseball bats had uses other than harming people. What say you, Dawn, about this?

Uzi's can be used as paperweights. Can I keep mine?

Posted by: Shawn at May 27, 2005 01:12 PMDid you know in New York City num-chucks, ninja stars, knives that do special tricks (switch blades ect...)are illegal.
It's illegal to carry in public (even concealed)any kind of knife with a blade 4 inches or longer.
or any knife in public displayed, worn or carried in open view.
I would start worrying about REAL laws in your own city than with hypothetical laws in Britain.
Posted by: PAUL at May 27, 2005 01:47 PMDid you know that bulletproof vests are illegal for the general public? We've got plenty of stupid laws here, don't get me wrong, but the idea of banning kitchen knives (or altering them to be less sharp) really takes the idiocy prize.
Posted by: Karol at May 27, 2005 01:55 PMAnd besides, is it really all that hard to make a knife? You get a piece of metal and sharpen it, for godsakes.
You stop people from selling knives, but it won't stop people from having them.
Posted by: Jason at May 27, 2005 03:02 PMIf you subtract out all the murders of Bad Guys by Bad Guys in the US, our murder rate is the same as Europe's. US murders are usually done with guns, Europe's with knives.
If the EU brought back guns, they would not have to worry about knives.
It's not evn a hypothetical law. It is a medic writing in the British Medical journal urging the change in knife design. His or her agenda I would assume is driven by the fact that the medical profession pick up the pieces on a Saturday night when some pissheads have "chibbed" each other, or a domestic has got out of hand. It couldn't be any further away from the statute book. It's merely somebody thinking aloud in a magazine article. Talk about blowing things out of proportion.
Posted by: Urbane McMeercat at May 27, 2005 04:40 PMIf Britain had decent food, the chefs would be rioting over this. You could never get away with this in France. It would be seen as compromising the proud French civilization.
Posted by: Yehudit at May 30, 2005 06:27 AMJake: Knives are far more deadly than guns in small areas. I'd fancy my chances with a kitchen knife vs yours with a gun if we were standing less than 5metres apart.
Urbane: Indeed and it makes sense. Also deep fat fryers that can't work w/o sunlight would save many lives. Im not sure why a kitchen knife needs a sharp point.
Yehudit: The fact that about 10 of the world's best 50 restaurants are in the UK, including the world's #1 (and four in top 10) probably pisses more Frenchmen off. Your best was #6
Posted by: Monjo at May 31, 2005 11:01 AMThere are the wolves, there are the sheep, and then there are the sheepdogs. In the great State of Texas we can train and obtain a license to carry a concealed weapon; this Texan "sheepdog" is ready for any wolves who sniff around me or mine.
It is also heartening to see that the Gun Lobby is being felt and heard in DC.
