That'll teach 'em
Google hates me, for reasons I can't understand. I am no longer included in their search results (at all) and several emails to them have gone unresponded. Apparently, all the hip kids are using a new search engine, Teoma, that I first heard about from a designer friend of mine and then again just now on the Corner from sitcom guy Warren Bell. I'm sold.

Except I don't buy all the google crap about ranking based on number of links rather than relevance. The two posts that garner me the most traffic have to do with Mr. Depp and with Mr. Schwartz. I'm certainly not linked more than news stations or newspapers.
Wonder what the deal is...
Posted by: kat at June 11, 2005 09:12 PMI don't care for it. I guess I'm just not one of the cool kids. :(
I have this as an icon on my toolbar. It's more or less the same thing:

Posted by: ll at June 11, 2005 10:41 PMThe thing I don't understand is why they suddenly got popular. Seems like they've been around for a couple of years.
Posted by: Dave at June 11, 2005 10:44 PMThat's strange. I have to wonder if someone complained to Google about you being spam.
Posted by: Shawn at June 12, 2005 12:14 AMStrange... my Google search hits have changed as well, but I'm still there. May have something to do with the rather generic words in the blog name.
But even search on Karol Alarming News, and you get this:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=karol+alarming+news
The first listing is an anti-Karol rant.
Posted by: W.C. Varones at June 12, 2005 02:50 AMThat's weak. I noticed that sometime ago, when I was trying to find a specific post on your site.
Did Google contribute to a significant number of your hits?
Posted by: Joseph Weisenthal at June 12, 2005 09:06 AMLately I've noticed more an more people with a gmail address. Seems like everyone has been sucked into this search engine company without considering its political leanings.
I'm gonna try to remember to use Ask or this new one, Teoma.

I just thought my hits fell off a little after the election but yes, it definitely hurt traffic for a little while.
Posted by: Karol at June 12, 2005 11:15 AMMakes one wonder if there's a google blacklist. Sounds like an extremely honorable thing to be on.
Posted by: Mark Poling at June 12, 2005 11:38 AMI should also say that I think most search engine traffic is just hits, not readers. I doubt people who find my site via a google or even technorati search visit more than the first time.

Never mind those leanings. I'm just wary of the privacy issues involved with someone scanning my Gmail, which is why I only use it for Google News Alerts.
Posted by: Shawn at June 12, 2005 12:20 PMPeople have gmail for the simple reason: 2gigs of disk space which u can use to share MP3s! There's group Gmailers shifting 1000s of songs through a single account, all out of the way of P2P programmes.
