Must-read of the day
If you haven't read Mark Steyn's genius piece on Guantanamo in yesterday's Washington Times, do yourself a favor and go read it. I don't know how he does it but I know I don't want him to stop.

So, according to Lileks, liberals *shouldn't* hold America's democratically-elected leaders to a higher standard of behavior than they do banana republic despots and Islamist monarchs?
"Look -- there's someone even worse!" is a hackneyed excuse. And yes, lots of American lefties like are self-hating. And yes, the Islamic (and other) extremists of the world are spared the condemnation their vile behavior deserves.
But Lileks has nothing to say. It's the same talking points, just with different examples.
Posted by: Joe Grossberg at June 14, 2005 03:53 PMThe most brilliant summation I have seen:
"But sure, go ahead, close Gitmo and wait for the rave reviews from the media -- right after the complaints it's culturally insensitive to rebuild the World Trade Center when it's the burial site of 10 revered Muslim martyrs."
Thanks for the heads-up.

Posted by: Karol at June 14, 2005 03:59 PMExcellent piece- I was fooled for a second, though - when he wrote/quoted:
Last week, Ambassador Atta el-Manan Bakhit of the Organization of the Islamic Conference called on Washington to show "no leniency" to the "perpetrators" of "this despicable crime."
I thought for a second, he was saying we should no leniency for the terrorists! lol. Silly me. I thought it was what I have been waiting for - for so long - serious, abundant criticism from the Muslim world for these jihadists. He was, of course, referring to the isolated, silly, reports of Koran desecration.
Karol:
Yes, you're right.
"But Lileks has nothing to say" should have read "But Steyn has nothing new to say".
Posted by: Joe Grossberg at June 14, 2005 05:07 PMI would have to say I agree with Joe here above. It's like cheating on your wife and then saying well at least I didn't kill anyone. It is still wrong. Although his statement about the WTC is just too funny!
Personally I think they all should be released with secret tracking chips inserted to them.
