Happy Fourth of July (by guest blogger Dorian Davis)

Today we are celebrating the persistence and sacrifice of the Minute Men of the American Revolution; the 200,00 men who enlisted and the 4,435 men who died to make our country free from King George of Great Britain. Today, we are celebrating the Founding Fathers, who wrote the most brilliant document in the history of the world, the Constitution; the one that has given us freedom for 229 years. It gave us the right to life. It gave us the right to liberty. And, though it did not promise happiness, it gave us the right to pursue it. So, today, we celebrate that.

We made the Constitution in 1776 ? Dorian, I think you better give the past a rest until you can get some basic facts in order.

In all seriousness, I think your numbers are a bit low. I think we had more-like maybe 215,000 men. While I think you are right on battle deaths, I think that number is low in terms of the number of deaths. Many patriots died due to sickness and in captivity. But great post. The Revolution, one of the most noble events in American history, is totally ignored by the public.

Von Bek,

We get it, you know a lot about American history. In the line you quote, Dorian wrote that the Constitution gave us freedom for 229 years, not that it was written 229 years ago.

VB--

Ok, ok.

Our Constitution was written and confirmed between 1787 and 1789. It was, of course, a final consummation of the Declaration of Independence, which was dated July 4, 1776.

You know, I had the same basic reaction Von Bek did - but what's the point of quibbling on the substance of a post of this sort when you more or less agree with the spirit...
