Last word on Live 8
I didn't have the time to articulate my problems with 'Live 8' so I had just a couple of sarcastic posts about the uselessness of it all. Mark Steyn has the best piece on the hypocricy of the artists and the problems with throwing money at a problem like Africa. A must-read.
Via Daily Lunch.
Update: A kind of companion piece to some of the points raised in Steyn's article is this post indicating that there is a correlation between lower taxes and more charitable giving.

From the Dallas Morning News, there's an even better case against aid to Africa. In this case, the answers are provided by James Shikwati.
Posted by: Shawn at July 11, 2005 02:28 PMWell, when I read this, it hurt a little. But no one told me musicians understand politics. I mean, I've heard of actors and athletes becoming politicians. But musicians? How many can we count?
David Gilmour made the following statement:
“Like most people I want to do everything I can to persuade the G8 leaders to make huge commitments to the relief of poverty and increased aid to the third world. It’s crazy that America gives such a paltry percentage of its GNP to the starving nations. Any squabbles Roger and the band have had in the past are so petty in this context, and if re-forming for this concert will help focus attention then it’s got to be worthwhile.”
What bothers me is it's not even an American criticizing America. it's a Brit!
Ah David. I still love ya!
According to People magazine, the "big" names, like Madonna were given $14,000 gift bags. The B list, got, at the very damn least, ipods.
Really, screw 'em all.
