Though Mary Matlin and James Carville are an exception....
....the rule remains that liberals and conservatives probably can't have serious relationships.
UPDATE: And if we think it's hard for Republicans and Democrats, just imagine how it is for Libertarians.

So, you and Dawn are no longer a couple?
Posted by: ll at July 17, 2005 11:06 PMExcept for in the extremely unfortunate and complex case of Dorian, I believe that liberals and conservatives can have successful relationships. The one x-factor in it all is personality: if the couple is very gracious in discussions of politics and open and respectful of the other's beliefs, all can go smoothly. I have been with my liberal girlfriend for nearly a year now, and not once have we seriously fought regarding politics. Not even when I tried to indoctrinate her 2-year old son into becoming a Republican (his first political act was to tear a TV guide cover of Jon Stewart into shreds). Just really depends on the people involved.

Posted by: Claudio at July 18, 2005 05:52 AMWell, I married someone who wouldn't vote for me, and we were together for 7 years before that. When people think of red-blue relationships, they envision Katha Pollitt going out with Michael Savage, and while they probably deserve each other, it ain't gonna happen. But most folks recognize that "What's the best way to run a country the size and complexity of the U.S.?" is a difficult question with few obviously right answers, and are grown up enough to see a potential match in someone who's reached a few different conclusions about it.
Of course, not everyone with an opposing viewpoint has this blessed open-mindedness, and I'm sure it's doubly hard for Dorian.
Posted by: Gib at July 18, 2005 10:38 AMThe saddest thing of all is - liberals are usually better looking :( :( :(
Posted by: Rachel at July 18, 2005 12:10 PMI can only assume one thing. Dorian is fat.
Posted by: Downtown Lad at July 18, 2005 01:26 PMOh yeah - Dorian is that cute guy.
So I have no idea what he is talking about. For gay men (like straight men), looks are 90% of the equation. Most gay men I know could care less about politics.
Posted by: Downtown Lad at July 18, 2005 01:28 PMNo matter how much I date conservatives (sadistic? or a constant need to argue?) I would probably agree.
Posted by: toby at July 18, 2005 01:29 PMHa ha - So you'd never date me Toby? ;) That's fine, but you have to give me the number of that Republican bartender...
Posted by: Downtown Lad at July 18, 2005 01:30 PMBy the way, the fat comment about Dorian was a joke. We all know he's a total hottie.
Posted by: Downtown Lad at July 18, 2005 01:31 PMKarol - What are these "comment pending template" things that keep popping up?
