I love blogging: speculating on what might happen based on something that might not be
Dorian Davis told me about the 'Dick Cheney is resigning' rumor that's been circulating today and my first instinct is that, if true, the reasoning has something to do with the lack of winnable Republican candidates for 2008. It might be his health, it might be a scandal or it might not be at all, but if true it presents a good opportunity for the Republican party.
US News and World Report notes that Bush may appoint Condi. As I've written in a million different ways all aimed at pissing off Ken Wheaton, Condi is a major no-go in '08, for dozens of reasons ranging from her singlehood to her pro-affirmative action and pro-choice positions. I'd love to see her in the VP role, but if Bush actually does get to pick a new VP, choosing Condi is a wasted act. The VP should be someone who could go into '08 as the favorite and come out the winner. Condi is not that person.

Yes - the Vice President resigning in disgrace, turning this Presidency into a scandal-ridden one - yup - that can only be good for Republicans in 2008.
WTF??!!!!
Posted by: Downtown Lad at October 19, 2005 09:45 PMAs opposed to having one heck of an endorsement by serving as VP?
Posted by: Shawn at October 19, 2005 10:15 PMActually, giving Rice the VP slot is probably the only way she could be elected president. She would be running from a very prominent position. Gore and GHW Bush succeeded in the primaries largely due to the fact that they were sitting VPs. It is easy to raise money and get media attention as a VP. Rice would upset the pro-life camp but if they are divided between several candidates, then Rice could win anyway.

If Bush has to pick a new VP, however will he top Harriet Miers?
Posted by: Stephen Silver at October 20, 2005 12:24 AMDL, how about you reread my post and then hyperventilate.
Posted by: Karol at October 20, 2005 02:14 AMIf Cheney resigns, Bush should appoint Gerald Ford. We already know is a decent follow-on to a corrupt Republican White House.
Posted by: Dennis at October 20, 2005 02:36 AMPersonally I feel it would be great if he appointed Powell. It would be a opportunity to mend some bridges and it would be great if Powell could become the 2008 ticket.
But this will probably never happen. I do expect it would be someone from the inner sanctum though. IF we are speculating who would you like/expect to see?
Posted by: Vincent at October 20, 2005 06:38 AMShe's pro-gun rights, moderate on abortion, the daughter of a minister, born and raised in segregated Alabama, and is one hell of a woman over all. If she has no chance in the primary, it's a primary and a party I want no part of.
But honestly, I think she has a very good chance. If she does run for it (or even better -- become VP before 08), I will be doing everything I can to support her.

No. The VP needs to be somebody who can take over if something, God forbid, happens to the president. Cheney and to a lesser extent Gore and Lieberman made little sense to balance the ticket but were excellent governing picks. I mean, Dan Quayle was supposed to president when Bush patria was done, right ?
What Von Bek said.
Additionally, there have been Cheney's going to resign rumors dating back to even before the 2000 election. Then there was the Cheney's going to step down and Bush will pick McCain as his running mate rumor from last year. Whatever.
That said, if this happens -- and it's a very very big if -- it would be a disgrace that the administration would cheapen the second highest position in government for some sort of political opportunism. Have you forgotten 2004 already, when Cheney was the man with experience for the job and Edwards was just some guy brought along for the electoral votes?
Posted by: Marco at October 20, 2005 10:07 AMIf anyone seriously thinks Cheney is leaving the Vice Presidency for anything short of death or prison, you're nuts.
Posted by: Not Dawn Summers at October 20, 2005 10:22 AMAll hail Karol's singular wisdom, despite the fact that Condi keeps mopping the field in the Ruffini straw poll.
Face it, people like her, and if "conservatives" can look past Rudy marrying his second cousin, having several extra-marital affairs and putting his children through a very, messy divorce with his girlfriend staying in the same house as his wife and kids, while they were still married, then I think Condi has nothing to worry about.
Posted by: Sean at October 20, 2005 10:49 AMExcept that, of course, in my singular wisdom Rudy has zero shot either.
Look, I'm on the record all over the place saying that these two candidates are pipe dreams. If I'm wrong, and I wouldn't mind being wrong, y'all can give me an 'I told you so'. But I'm not wrong.
Posted by: Karol at October 20, 2005 10:58 AMI hate you. I hate you so much.
Posted by: ken at October 20, 2005 11:14 AMOh please.. oh please... oh please!!!
Posted by: toby at October 20, 2005 11:20 AMFunny how a silly rumor is making headlines of Condi Rice as the next VP. What a fabulous story, although Cheney is not stepping down anytime soon. But if his health put his life at risk, it would be a historic moment in our history to have a woman who grew up in the segregated South rise up based on her own smarts and success as Provost of Stanford, and as foreign policy expert to become our next VP.
I would agree there is a lack of winnable GOP candidates for 2008, but Condi has been in the top tier contenders being considered by the Republicans since February 2005 at 18% in the Marist poll after Rudy and McCain. She has stayed in the top third for the past 10 months, heads above Newt, Frist, Owens, Brownback, Huckabee, and many others. She has 60% job approval, international admiration, and 95% name recognition in the US. Being single is an asset, she does not have HUSBAND BAGGAGE like any other political woman who might run. Condi has made it on her own, not with her husband clearing the path for her, or a political family with millions to get favored status. In the name of representative government, as a celebration of gender-balance and racial diversity in the Republican party, our nation should support Condi as VP or as the next president. You can get more information about an effort to put Condi on the ballot for 2008 at americansforrice.com and she is one of the most qualified people in our nation for that job.
Oh, Karol.
Posted by: Dorian Davis at October 20, 2005 01:04 PMKarol - I read your post. It says that "it presents a good opportunity for the Republican party".
Again - WTF????!!!
Posted by: Downtown Lad at October 20, 2005 01:19 PMMaybe Karol should check out what happened the last time a VP was forced to resign....
Posted by: Downtown Lad at October 20, 2005 01:22 PMCrystal, you forgot to mention that she also has the musical chops to share a stage with Yo Yo Ma and not embarrass herself.
I'm sure on the side she's curing cancer and finalizing the equations that will turn Cold Fusion into a reality.
I want to have her baby.
