Staying with the Jewish theme

Does anyone in NY know of any Jewish services for those of us that can't be described as too religious? But here's the caveat: I would like something aimed at youngish people but it can't, I repeat can't, be a singles thing. I hate the meatmarket scene even when I'm single but it seems like any Jewish services aimed at people in their 20's is inevitably made to marry you off. Any leads? I know I have some Jews checking this site, let me know.

No Jews here. Ooh, but if anyone has leads on catholic services of the same nature that are designed to marry you off, let me know.

Makor has events which, while attended by Jews, are not necessarily religious in nature. There are some mensches in the crowd that will try to marry you off at the drop of a hat, but they supply bats at the door to fend off such people. Makor.

They may have services, as well.

Although considered orthodox, Aish services are extremely user friendly. Their focus is on educating those who had a Bar Mitzvah where it was most likely more 'bar' than 'mitzvah'. I find that people come there to learn rather than to find a husband/wife.

Also, Congregation Kehilath Jeshurun on 125 East 85th Street (how close is that) has Learners services downstairs every Sat. morning. I've been numerous times and really enjoyed it.

My advice would be to switch fields and go into investment banking.

Jessica:

I doubt that Aish is appropriate for someone who is not religious. The clientele seems pretty frum to me.

No, see, I don't want to meet anyone. :-)

Don't go to B'Nai Jeshuran (BJ.org); too much of a meet market, and you probably won't agree with the rabbi's political sensibility.

Try Kol Zimrah- KolZimrah.info. A buddy of mine is in charge of it.

Karol, if you find any good ones, please let me know too.

Ditto on BJ, its reputation is overblown. Ditto on Aish, also their classes and lectures are fairly condescending. Kol Zimrah is nice, lots of singing and conviviality. But they only meet Friday nights about every 3 weeks.

What's your idea of "religious"? Are you talking about how much of the service is Hebrew or how long it is or how many of the attendees are observant?

West End Synagogue and SAJ are Reconstructionist, which is sort of post-modernist ("God is a process, not a person") and most attendees are not observant. But they also like to sing, they aren't dry. And they have Torah discussions instead of sermons.

I haven't been here, but it seems to be a hippy artsy shul. Probably exceedingly leftwing. This one is also downtown, probably less hippie.

Kehilat Hadar is pretty seriously into traditional liturgy, but they do have classes occasionally to explain the service and make it more userfriendly, and they love to sing.
