Seeking team. Cute quarterback a plus.

I'm not a big football fan but, as most of my friends are of the male pursuasion, I'm often in a football-watching situation. My brother and a great majority of my friends are Jets fans. And, well, the Jets are having a really, really bad season. Like the worst possible, I think. Are they on their 5th Quarterback at this point? In any case, I like having a team to root for and my options seem to be limited to these:

NY Giants- I guess this is the reasonable alternative to the Jets but it seems awfully frontrunnerish to root for the Giants this year. I may, just for NY pride, though.

Dallas Cowboys- One of my best friends is a Cowboys fan but he's the only fan I know. Seeing him hop around the room last Monday night when the Cowboys pulled off a stunning last-minute victory was pretty fun.

Houston Texans- David Carr. Yummy David Carr. David Carr.jpg Mmmmm David Carr.

I'm open to other suggestions.

well, if you want to go the opposite of "frontrunnerish": minnesota vikings.

Cowboys!? Is this a sick joke?

And you claim to be a native New Yorker.

Why Cowboys fans are like Republicans:
1) Solid Home Base in Texas
2) Contrarians (in NY) who enjoy getting snotty looks from NYers who CAN NOT BELIEVE we are Cowboys fans
3) Similar to point 2, non-Cowboys fans will give you a hard time about being a boys' fan but it will only show signs of their insecurity about their own team. This is usually the second reaction that follows the reaction from point 2 but no less fun. We know we're better and do not need to stoop to their level (unless we're in an antagonizing mood)

Other thoughts:
1) Jets fans are cute in their eternal struggle for a winner. IMO, this is no way to go through life, not by choice at least
2) That being said, if you're going to be a NY fan, go w the jets. at least you can commiserate with your bro and your other jet fan friends. And yes, there will be plenty of comisserating. Also, you don't have the look or feel of a Giants fan - you'll just have to trust me on this one
3) David Carr will likely not play his entire career with the Texans, no sense using his mug to determine your fave team.
4) You really like the City of Dallas - think of the road trip possibilities!
5) You too can hop around a room and feel the joy of being a boys fan. Good seats on the bandwagon are still available.
6) I haven't written a post this long in about 3 years - that should be enough to get you to join the team.

I probably wouldn't qualify as a football fan, but I've liked the Dolphins for almost my entire life. Join me.

Go Pats!

Listen here fan of boys club,

your Cowboys stink! There is no Super Bowl w/Drew. You may get some Tuna playoff action but thats it. A bandwagon seat now can be had real cheap on E-bay so go peddle your wares to somebody else.

Karol,

Have I ever told you how good you look in green? Go w/ the family bonds that are the Jets and the Yankees. This way when most of your friends and family are celebrating a Gang Green Superbowl you can say you got in on the ground floor. Its like getting in on the Kotie years!

Dude

No, dude.

I'm sure you're much more attractive to David Carr the QB than to David Carr the NYT writer, yes?

Posted by: Steve at November 21, 2005 10:46 PM

So, basically, when Dawn says a team sucks, they win. Is that right?

Posted by: Karol at November 22, 2005 12:56 AM

I was a Cowboy fan in HS living, in the DC area.... THAT'S a REAL fan.

Posted by: JFH at November 22, 2005 01:08 PM

Well, let's see: Knicks suck.

First of all forget the David Carr thing 'cuz he is on his way out of the Texas and maybe out of the NFL(not to mention that he is punch drunk from all the shots he has taken). Speaking of Texas, if you aint ropin' a steer u dont need to root for the cowboys(Shaikella how did you ever stray so far?). I am a long suffering Jet fan so all I have ever known is disapointment. The dude is right, you would look fetching in green, but I dont know if I can send you on a long and likely fruitless journey as a Jet fan just because you can pull off green. Although I shouldnt, I will give you 3 reasons to become a Jet fan: 1) It seems you look good in green. 2) Them being a psuedo NY team (they play in Jersey for goodness sake) they are on TV every week and you can actually go to a game as opposed to waiting for Thanksgiving to see the cowboys play anyone other than the Giants. 3) The Jets are so bad that they dont even have a bandwagon. You can join the life long sufferers(as a Jew you have a latent membership, just come and accept it anytime, misery loves company...that counts for you mr. life long Cowboy fan). Those are terrible reasons I know but we are Jet fans for cryin' out loud.

P.S I didnt even mention the Giants because the Giants are evil and many people with in the organization have recently been charged with child molestation and harboring terrorists(and you know how much we hate child molestors and terrorists Karol).

J! E! T! S! SUCK! SUCK! SUCK!

If you're looking at the (allegedly still) happily married Carr as a reason to root for the Texans, then it is apparent that team quality is not a determining factor.

In that mold, I would suggest a rooting interest for the San Francisco 49ers, who have just recently signed (as an emergency back-up) Jesse Palmer, otherwise known as The Bachelor.

Don't be an Eagles fan...

You will know only heartache and despair, interspersed with random seasons of misleading hope.

Goodbye cruel world.

You realize that David Carr is on his way to breaking his own record for most sacks in a season, right?

That's not a good thing.

Laurence Simon has quite a bit to say on the topic.
