Nightmare?
"Leftist Evo Morales, a former coca leaf farmer who says he is a "nightmare for the US," was poised to become Bolivia's first indigenous president on Sunday after his conservative rival conceded defeat."
A nightmare for the US is 19 men killing three thousand people in one day. It's that 4+ years after that day, we're back in blathering and bickering mode, instead of kicking ass and taking names. It's that most of the world doesn't seem to care if the Islamofascists do win, as long as its a black eye for Bush. Some farmer becoming leader of, sorry, where now? Bolivia? That's not even a blip in our REM sleep. We've got bigger problems than which leftist is running which South American country into the ground today.

Actually, the nightmare is for Bolivia. Not that leftists here notice -- they still think Cuba is the workers' paradise.

Yeah, you would never catch the U.S. government interfering with the internal politics of South / Central American countries.
No, this is a problem. Bolivia and Venezuela, the two top producing oil and energy states in Latin America, are now in the hands of leftists. This new regime will also be looking to increase the production of the cocoa leaf which means mas cocaine flooding into our nation which means more criminal activity (and no doubt el presidente Jorge W. Bush's guest worker plan will even further increase the number of smugglers across our border).Americans should be concerned about this development.

Posted by: DT at December 19, 2005 11:22 AMThat's the thing, Urbane: yes, we once cared because we had the Soviet Union trying to take over countries and convert them to Communism, all the while using them as a point near the US with which they can threaten us. So, yes, it used to matter to us. These days? Like, I wrote, we've got bigger problems than South American countries electing anti-American (are there any other kinds?) leftists. You want to have your people starve, go on and elect a Communist. Works every time. My only hope is that when they're eating grass, we won't bail them out. But, of course, we're suckers and we probably will.
