Quote of the Day
"A pro-choice Republican who wants the Democrats to nominate a more centrist candidate so that the Democrats can take back the White House is called a...what's the word I'm looking for???? Oh yeah...a DEMOCRAT."
-Rightwing Dad in response to a Newsweek article by Eleanor Clift that notes 'A pro-choice Republican who spoke with NEWSWEEK but didn't want her name used said she is more worried about Alito after hearing him testify, and wishes the Democrats would spend their time finding a candidate to beat Hillary Clinton in the primaries "or we're going to get four more years of judges like this." She thinks that to win the White House the Democrats need a more centrist candidate than Clinton.'

There are a lot of Republicans who are not happy with Bush but also don't like the Democrats because they are too liberal. They would like to see a change in the White House but only if the Democrats nominate someone who is a centrist. I do not see why you would call that person a "Democrat." It just sounds like a disgruntled Republican.
Posted by: Dan at January 18, 2006 03:56 PMFrankly, it sounds like something Eleanor Clift pulled out of her ass.
Posted by: ll at January 18, 2006 04:05 PMOr it could be one of those New England Republicans who would be a Democrat in any other part of the country, but their family has been wealthy Republicans for so long they can't stand to change {cough}Lincoln Chafee, Jim Jeffords{cough}.
Probably the only "Republicans" Eleanor Clift can get on record.
Posted by: Jim Durbin at January 18, 2006 05:03 PMOr maybe someone in the Bill Weld or Al D'Mato crowds or like minded Republicans who dined off the scraps thrown to them by Clinton. It could even be a Mario Cuomo lover (like Rudy G). Hell, it could even be a Specter aide.
Posted by: Von Bek at January 18, 2006 05:42 PMI still don't understand the fuss from pro-choicers over a nominee like Alito.
You hear Schumer, Kennedy and the whole crew say they want a judge who is "mainstream."
Well, overturning Roe would put the issue back to the "mainstream." If the Democrats really believe "mainstream" America is pro-choice, then let the State's legislate on the issue.
If the "mainstream" is afraid of abortion rights being taken away, then heck, they'll have to learn who their State Senator and Assembly person are and vote accordingly.
I still meet people who haven't gotten a clue who their state legislatures are. Some politcally active folk they are. Maybe if Roe got overturned, they'd begin to wake up and pay attention locally.

I can say this complete confidence:
I have never met a Republican who "wants" to see Democrat win; its like saying a Yankees fan "wants" to see the Mets win because, frankly, its time for a change.
