Nightmare
Who knew the power of the cartoon? "Editor-in-Chief Harry Siegel, managing editor Tim Marchman, arts editor Jonathan Leaf and one-man city hall bureau Azi Paybarah" have resigned from the NY Press over its publisher's refusal to reprint the Muhammad cartoons. Siegel only took over the paper in August and its sad to see him go so soon. Azi Paybarah had become a must-read for local politics and I have a feeling that wherever he ends up, he'll be a wild success. I look forward to reading all of them elsewhere.
Update: Azi im's me that his new site is now up. Check out 51st State.

I suppose the NY Press has suddenly decided to become sensitive after the strenuously unfunny article last spring about the funniest things about Pope John Paul II dying. Though I was offended deeply, I didn't start any riots and demand that the publisher or auther be beheaded for it.
Why should Islam get a free pass?
Posted by: Fallen Sparrow at February 8, 2006 10:16 AMBut the thing is, Siegel took over after the Pope fiasco. It was going to be a new day at the Press.
Posted by: Karol at February 8, 2006 10:35 AMFallen Sparrow, disregard my comment. I just reread yours and I thought you were blaming the just recently departed editorial staff for the Pope thing. My bad.
Posted by: Karol at February 8, 2006 10:45 AMBig up and respect to those cats for having a pair(I wouldnt respect them any less, but I am very happy that all 3 of those dudes got jobs lined up).
Posted by: Pheeleepok at February 8, 2006 10:53 AMI posted one of the cartoons on my site.
I also posted a photo something else, lest anyone has forgotten to what extent certain religious fundamentalists will go to kill Americans.
The political correctness in this city is akin to laying down while the enemy shoots you in the back. We used to have courageous publishers on Park Row. Now we have accountants and attorneys running most of the newspapers in town.
Azi is a fantastic journalistic. The Fifth Estate had been an hourly staple for me as a writer and one of my favorite blogs in New York. The New York Press has been maintaining wonderful coverage and a kinship with journalists on other newspapers.
That news room had earned the respect of the city in recent months -- and so I felt it only right to post the "cartoon" that has the most powerful human beings in American media fearful.
It was the least I could do for Azi -- and I agree with Karol that he shall land somewhere on his feet... to write again.
