You say you want a revolution....

If you had told me a year and a half ago, during the most contentious election of my life, that I would be standing in a concert hall for an anti-war show called "Bring 'Em Home Now!", surrounded by people in 'Impeach Bush' buttons while listening to political messages from the great minds of our time, such as Peaches (pictured below, whose most famous song is 'Fuck the pain away'), I might've believed you but probably would have wondered for how long I was able to control myself and who was the first victim of my confrontational nature.

Peaches.jpg

Turns out, I was completely unfazed and limited my own political message to my new 'Poker is not a crime' t-shirt (yes, really).

Part of it was that I was helping cover the event with my friend (who was there for Michelle Malkin, his post and pics are up on her site now) and so I was scribbling notes in a little notebook the whole time while he took pictures. But mostly, it was the feeling that I was surrounded by the politically impotent who felt, I mean really felt, that a rock concert would help them further their political goals. It was laughable. So, I laughed.

We have this contingency of people, who actually believe they are the majority. It was mentioned several times last night that most Americans have come around to their view, that the troops need to come home now. How do they know? Well, polls say so! Which, fine, you want to believe polls, that's ok with me. But how come their elected officials don't believe those same polls? Why aren't their Senators and Congressmen calling for withdrawal en masse? If the majority agrees that immediate withdrawal is necessary, why is it a touchy political issue? It should be so simple. In fact, I highly recommend that Democrats follow the polls and run in '06 on the idea of immediate withdrawal. I want to see how that would go down, exactly.

The whole concert was something straight out of South Park. Susan Sarandon was there. Cindy Sheehan, of course. A random anti-war veteran of this war. Chuck D. Margaret Cho. Everyone took themselves extremely seriously. Steve Earle, some old hippie looking sort-of country singer kicked the night off with a song called 'Fuck the FCC' the lyrics of which are the extremely insightful "Fuck the FCC, Fuck the FBI, Fuck the CIA, Livin' in the motherfuckin' USA." Cindy Sheehan proclaimed herself a 'rockstar' and led the crowd in a chant of "Violence and occupation/Do not bring liberation/That's bullshit/Get off it/This war is for profit". Chuck D. came up with some cockamamie scheme to get everyone in America to have a passport. This would somehow throw off Homeland Security but also would serve to have Americans spread the message into the world that we're not all like Bush. Except, of course, that a majority of Americans voted for him. But don't let logic get in the way of Chuck's big idea.

Geoff Millard1.jpg

All in all, it was a collection of hasbeens and publicity seekers. The worst of the spotlight whores was actually the anti-war vet, Geoff Millard (pictured above, note the upside down flag on his shoulder: he's like so subversive, man.). He was just basking in the adoration. He was also easily the most pretentious, dumb person up there (and, c'mon, with this collection, it's a feat). He's this white guy who is an African-American studies major (of course), quotes MLK and Malcolm X, and said some of the stupidest things of the night such as "my rights aren't being trampled by Al Qaeda" and "Saddam Hussein never tapped my phone." Idiot. While he was talking, I heard someone scream out 'Why did you join in the first place?' Phenomenal question. I wonder if it was a Protest Warrior or just some person that came for the music and couldn't take it any more.

Looking around at these middle to upper class white kids who had come to a rock concert to fight the power, I couldn't help but let any hate or anger I would've had towards them fade away. They have zero consistency in their opinions. America is at once a land of freedom (what else can they be implying when they say 'this is America!' in righteous indignation when asked to stop blocking traffic with their 'free speech') but also founded by murderers and oppressors who should return this land to the Native Americans. They say they support the troops but that makes zero sense. Support the troops doing what, exactly? Fighting in a war that they oppose? Taking orders for a man they despise? These were some of the most priveleged people on earth. They had never struggled, never known actual oppression, and probably never would. If a concert makes them feel like they're doing something, whatever, no skin off my back.

The highlight of the night was seeing Conor Oberst (Bright Eyes). He only sang three songs, one of which was the unbearable 'When the President Talks to God' but he still has a boatload of talent and the political stuff only detracts from it. And he remains pretty to look at:

Thanks to the excellent guy who took these pics.

Conor Oberst is Frodo Baggins.

Welcome Michelle Malkin readers. Millards' plan to support the troops, from subboard.com:
... Citizens can do more to actively obstruct our government’s foreign policy. “If you are going to tax me to fund an illegal war, I’m not going to pay taxes ... When people say, ‘If a soldier leaves and goes to Canada instead of going to an illegal war, I’m going to send him money,’ that’s resistance.”
Uh huh.

Not going to pay taxes, huh? What, did he watch "The Practice" last week.

Good post, yo.

The Sad Facts:

Ms. Cho is not funny. Being a Leftist and unfunny is not an act, it is a lifestyle choice.

The "vet" is a National Guardsman who was on a BG's staff during his "tour of duty". I seriously doubt this pogue did anything while in Iraq.

Michael Stipe was once the lead singer of a great band. Now, it looks like he is dying of AIDS and his politics are even more stupid.

Susan Sarandon is old and stupid, which is just a sad combination.

Lastly, Cindy Sheehan is clearly mentally ill. How else can one explain why a woman who was "too tired" to speak to her son the last time he called home can find the time to bask in the spotlight but not buy her son tombstone?

you guys are so confused i cant even find it in my heart to be mad at you; it would be like yelling at a retard. first i was poor growing up like really poor and i am anti bush. i know there are the dumb fucks there who want imediet withdrawl but they dont rep. the majority of anti war citizens. you red bastards just take the idea of one blue and scream it into everybodys face untill everyone thinks thats what alkl of them are pushing at every protest. i could say just cuse your red you support all those reds who protest military funeral because acording to them "us soldiers are sopporting homosexuality by fighting for a country who supports it" but im not so ignorant to assume all you idiots support these same party ass holes. im not like you i use logic. second we support the troops for makeing a comitment to the usa and following through with it to the end. these people were willing to die for us if we were in danger and you dont see how someone can respect that commitment? you ignorant fucks your not even good enugh for hell youll spend eternity in the vestibule. p.s. thats from dantes inferno which you would know if you bastards actually read any thing. p.s.s.poker is gambling so it is a crime and should be you shitty ass excuse for a journalist

Don't worry, Sane - they cover capitalization and punctuation in third grade. Spelling tests start in second, though, so you may want to study up some.

Posted by: inmypajamas at March 21, 2006 09:11 PM

This is hilarious. It's true about those oh-so-important polls; media polls for one reason or another almost always oversample Democrats, which politicians know but the "activists" seem to have no idea about.

That Peaches song was awesome in "Lost in Translation" (it was in that scene in the strip club). Thinking over the song, it definitely makes me realize how misguided our Mideast foreign policy is. What was I thinking??

It would have been nice to just assemble all the performers and attendees and ask them the question, "should the U.S. have invaded Afghanistan?" The answers would have been very instructive.

"sane person", that guy who protests at military funerals happens to be a Democrat.

Posted by: Brandil Lawrence at March 21, 2006 10:57 PM

Priceless. A New York City Republican calling others out for their pretension and privilege. Telling that all you can do is attack the people involved, not the core of their message.

As for courage of convictions, well, you believe in the war: how about you take a walk down (and I'm assuming it's down) to the Times Square recruiting office for a tour or three? I'm sure they're looking.

Posted by: MT at March 22, 2006 02:22 AM

Bush's low approval ratings are NOT just about Iraq. There are many conservatives, such as myself, who are currently not happy with Bush because of the spending issue. As for Iraq, most conservatives fully support our efforts there, and have no issue with Bush about it.

By the way, I am talking about REAL poll numbers, not the CBS polls which are heavily weighted with Democrats.

"As for courage of convictions, well, you believe in the war: how about you take a walk down (and I'm assuming it's down) to the Times Square recruiting office for a tour or three? I'm sure they're looking."

I would, JB, but they don't take 47 year olds. STFU! Not my problem that Reagan and Bush seniro were presidents during my eligible years and the country was GREAT!

Posted by: Dave at March 22, 2006 10:27 AM

Wait wait wait, dear. You like Bright Eyes but you don't like Steve Earle?

I usually agree with your politics, but if you think that Bright Eyes passes for good music than I think I need to join you at one of these meet-ups and show you the light.

Posted by: Ben at March 22, 2006 10:43 AM

JB:

The problem is, when the core message is expressed by people like this, how can you take it seriously? God bless them for their apparent dedication, but it's impossible to believe that they're actually trying to convert anyone to their cause. Only someone motivated by a desperate fear of not being cool (i.e., a teenager) would adopt a political stance because Michael Stipe said to. Freaks only impress other freaks.

The second problem is that by supporting their position we validate them, their political beliefs, their hyperbolic statements, and their ridiculous behavior. They're rapidly using up whatever social and political capital they had left over from the 60s - we don't want to give them any more.

Criticizing them may be like shooting the messenger, but sorry - everything's connected.

BTW - Who the hell is Peaches? The only one I remember is an ancient diva, one half of the duo Peaches & Herb. Was that her, and why was she dressed like Tina Turner?

Posted by: SB at March 22, 2006 10:48 AM

Hey JB,

If you are so against this war and for the "freedom fighters" in Iraq, why don't you go join them? How about you go strap a bomb to yourself and attack an Iraqi patrol? I am sure that they are looking for some useful idiots to join their ranks. What? Oh. That tired old chickenhawk rhetoric that you are spewing isn't backed up by action? Pathetic.

Posted by: Duncan Avatar at March 22, 2006 10:50 AM

Actually there have been three different Peaches's of "Peaches and Herb" fame; Herb keeps replacing them. The middle one was the one with all the hits. I learned this from VH1. They're not connected to this one; they were all black, and this one's a Jew.

Yeah, that's it, Duncan...because I'm against the war I must be for al-Qaeda and the insurgents over there. Keep looking at the world in black and white, it makes you no less ridiculous than the left-wing "freaks" you purport to mock.

Posted by: JB at March 22, 2006 01:26 PM

DAMN. It doesn't let you post without an email address, Steff. Next time right-click and click 'back' to add the address and post, sorry.

"Sane" person, while I always encourage insane rants, it wasn't me who was saying that everyone believes in immediate withdrawal, it was the crazies at the concert.

JB, Uh so how does being a NY Republican make me pretentious exactly? As for attacking the people not the message, the message is moronic, I'm pretty sure I made that clear in my post.

Posted by: Karol at March 22, 2006 01:30 PM

And Ben, yes I love Bright Eyes. I'm a big lyrics person and Earle's 'fuck the fbi, fuck the cia' doesn't do it for me. I always say my favorite anti-Iraq-war song is Bright Eyes 'One foot in front of the other' (the way it was before it was released. It's called something else on the album with terrible female backing vocals).

Posted by: Karol at March 22, 2006 01:31 PM

As for courage of convictions, well, you believe in the war: how about you take a walk down (and I'm assuming it's down) to the Times Square recruiting office for a tour or three? I'm sure they're looking.

Hate to break it to ya dude, but they DON'T have to LOOK, still plenty of people out there joining up that believe in what we're doing over there, VOLUNTARILY I might add. Course you don't hear that in your polls do you? And before you ask, I'm speaking from a recruiter's voice of experience!

Posted by: LCA at March 22, 2006 02:01 PM

Karol,
oops ok. So waaait a minute here, please tell me the album "with terrible female backing vocals" you refer to is not "I'm Wide Awake...", with the Legendary Emmylou Harris?? as that is the most beautiful dueting in a long time! what songs did he play at the concert?

Posted by: Steff at March 22, 2006 02:46 PM

JB, nice hypocrisy:

Telling that all you can do is attack the people involved, not the core of their message.

That's good advice. But why don't you take it?

As for courage of convictions, well, you believe in the war: how about you take a walk down (and I'm assuming it's down) to the Times Square recruiting office for a tour or three? I'm sure they're looking.

Telling, isn't it, that all you can do is attack the speaker and not her message. Or, does your support of the Iraq war depend solely on her enlistment?

First of all, it's spelled "fascist", and "Hitlertimes" is a brand new word. But I suppose they aren't teaching English composition in high school anymore. I think it's more "English as a fascist language" or some sort. Let me know when your grades come out. Your momma will probably want to cry.

Posted by: Joel at March 22, 2006 05:06 PM

Isn't it great when people can honestly and openly debate questions of foreign policy in a give and take exchange of well thought out-factually accurate claims, like when "the only sane man" says, "you ignorant fucks your not even good enugh for hell youll spend eternity in the vestibule..."

Karol, great job covering the concert, I am certain that you deserve applause/kudos/rewards/etc... There is no way I could have sat through that shower of ignorance.

I absolutely agree, if the Democrats choose to run on a platform of immediate withdrawal because they start believing the polls, they are going to be wandering in the political wilderness for another 4 years.

And what I want to know is, how does Herb dispose of his used Peaches, and has anyone told him about the yiddische Peaches? Damn...this could get ugly.

As to attacking the people, not the message - well, messages tend to originate with people. In their brains, in some cases. Do you tend to listen carefully to people for whom you have no respect?

Why should I treat someone's message as if it were this pristine entity that simply arose from some mysterious well of pure ideas? People construct their messages - usually from all the other crap that's rattling around in their brains. Or else they parrot those messages from other people that confirm their existing prejudices. If I'm going to trust a person's message then they'd better convince me that their brains contain something other than dirty jokes and stupid song lyrics. And that they've actually thought about the problem themselves rather than recycling some memes from 1968 and a Noam Chomsky novel. Sorry - being freaky and controversial and contrarian and raging against the machine is not proof of an independent mind. Just means they're following a different herd.

Posted by: SB at March 22, 2006 06:59 PM

P.S. - That's why blogs are better. Better to be writing something - anything - than sitting in an audience while some prima donna tells dirty jokes and shouts slogans at you, or standing in the rain staring at some dipshit wearing a papier mache head and a sign with three words on it.

Posted by: SB at March 22, 2006 07:13 PM

This is too good to be true. I want a copy of the "performance," for my collection of things that will never amount to anything positive.

Posted by: gary at March 22, 2006 07:14 PM

Ok, I really don't want to start any more flame wars or be a troll, but I'd just like to point out, hmm, 2 things.

SB, I take serious offense to your statement that teenagers are people who do things just to be cool, this is a generalization. I'd like to add I am a teenager who doesn't do things "just to be cool."

Joel, I think Rusty was just trying to use a little clever wordplay, not misspelling his words. America had kkk in it (I don't think i have to explain that) and fasscist is spelled with just one extra letter (do I really have to tell which one?). I can't explain the joining of Hitler and times, no more than I can explain pointless bashing of others' posts.
I don't mean to bash others' posts myself, I'd just like to point out these things.

As for the article, I don't really know what to say. I'm able to vote now this year, I just hope I can find candidates I agree with. Whether that's Bush or not, for president or anything else, I cannot say.

I apologize for the teenager remark. You are correct - that was a generalization. No malice intended - just cynicism, which is a weakness of mine. There are certainly people of all ages and political persuasions who are motivated by being part of the "right" group - the cool group, the holy group, the smart group, the we're-on-the-right-side-of-history group, or what have you.

I'm glad you're reading this blog, hope you're reading others across the political spectrum and that you don't believe half of what you read. You sound like a thoughtful person. The fact is, I am hoping that you and others your age will be able to think outside the Vietnam-era box the rest of us seem to be stuck in and maybe bring some fresh ideas to the discussion. Well, hoping - but not hopeful. That's just the cynicism again.

Anyway, good luck with your first vote. Make it count!

This is great stuff! I'm currently in Abu Ghraib with a few months left on a 15 month tour. Its fun reading about these celebrities? protesting the war. I love the chickenhawk arguments probably the most. The leftists think its such a winner. What was that move from the Karate Kid that had 'no defense?'

Thats the Chickenhawk argument to them, the ridiculous looking Swan Move. They say, "if you support it why don't you join it!" and the only counter-argument, in thier minds, is "if you don't support it, don't join it!" Which is, obviously, not effective since their whole political platform revolves around the do-nothing option. They have no intention of joining anything that lasts longer than a bad concert.

But you know what is an effective counter-argument? There are 130000 troops over here that volunteered to serve. We defend those that are unable to defend themselves and we volunteered for the job. And if we follow their logic to its, uh, logical conclusion, then all 60 million people that voted for Bush need to come here and start kicking ass. Maybe that is thier plan to win the next election...

I love Rusty, too. Apparently German wasn't offered in his high school. It is "Zieg Heil," big guy. Even misspellings in other languages bug me. The only exlanation for this spelling is if he is trying to put a French accent on it...in that case, of course, he has my full support!

And lastly, when the lefties call Bush 'Chimpy' or some derivation thereof and misspell KKKarl Rove, accuse those that disagree with them the Gestapo...it exposes them for what they accuse others of. Am I not allowed a dissenting view?

I told my family when I was home on leave that if, God forbid, I am killed in Iraq, I want it well known that I am a successful civilian engineer with a good paying job, Army Reservist of 18 years, volunteered then and volunteered for this current operation out of full support for the policies and love of this country. My death would not change my views on the Iraq war and it should not change thiers. My final wishes, stated as such, are to "not go Sheehan on me."

My family agreed not to shit on my life.

I left when my children were 2 and 4. I'll return when they are 4 and 6. Let that stand as the counter to the Chickenhawk argument. Where is the committment of the left?
