One of those 'read the whole thing' ones

Do you really think a Democratic Congress will get tough on illegal immigration? Yes, Howard Dean has said, “The first thing we want is tough border control.” He’s also talked out of another orifice about gay marriage on the 700 Club and blamed conservative Supreme Court justices for Kelo vs. New London when the four most conservative ones voted against it. (For that matter, you’re a conservative. Why the heck are you listening to and trusting Howard Dean?)

-Jim Geraghty in a great piece on the dumbness of a conservative sit-out for election 2006. A must-read for all Republicans.

But here's the problem. Real American conservatives are generally a fairly distrustful lot. We value independence and results and frankly the GOP ain't delivering.

Ah but the cheerleaders at National Review tell us to trust the party. Trust the party as the government gets bigger. Trust the party as the president puts the people of Iraq over the people of New Orleans. Trust the party as Bush rolls back the immigration laws so that the good people of the heartland get to put up with increased crime and see our culture get mocked in schools and other places all in the name of multiculturalism. Trust the party as gas prices continue to stay up.

It's time for the Republicans to go back to their conservative roots. The problem is how do we do it ? Frankly the GOP needs something to wake it up and if tossing Chaffee and Talent and Burns is the way to do it, well then ok. But then the problem is if conservatives kick the GOP's ass too much, then we'll hear how the party needs to go to the middle in 2008 and we'll have a baby killing, sodomy marriage supporing, America last nominee like McCain, Rudy or Rice.

I wouldn't mind seeing a little gridlock the next two years to ensure that nothing is done at the federal level but how the hell that can be done without sacrificing 08 is beyond me. Maybe the best thing to happen is if you have a RINO in your neck of the woods or your race is not competitive, go fishing or vote third party. Hillary nd Spitzer are gonna get 60% anyways and Chaffee deserves to lose. Otherwise, hold your nose, vote for the lesser of two evils and when they ask for money say hell no.
