"He knocked my skull one way, and my brain swam the other and splat."

My cousin and I, all fill out release forms for the boxing; basically if we got our necks snapped the club wasn’t responsible. Also, if we won, we get a video of the fight and a 50 dollar bar tab.

-Fisch in a post on how he became a boxer, won the big fight and ended up in the emergency room. He never says if he gets the girl.

Alright, Von Bek's rules for the really ameatur boxing:

1. The boxer has an advantage over the puncher. Let the other guy punch himself out in the first round while you pepper him with jabs. He'll be a lot easier to handle later in the fight.

2. Keep it simple. There are basic rules of boxing. Walk away from his power hand (if he is righthanded, walk to his left-your right). Keep the guard up. Steal the last 30 seconds of each round (ala Ray Leonard against Hagler). Work the jab.

3. Know what you can get away with. While low blows and hitting a guy when he is down is always illegal, some stuff-say kindey punches-which are illegal in the pros may be legal here.

4. Do not lose your cool. Don't let yourself be overcome with anger. If that happens, you will make a mistake.

5. Work the body. While it never gets you points with the judges, it hurts like hell and in these kind of fights its the ones you don't see coming that get you. A body punch out of nowhere can take a guy out no matter how good he is (see Roy Jones taking out Virgil Hill).

6. If the fight is close, do not dance around the last round. Nobody likes that. I once put on a whiz of a last round where I was slick, feinting, a master of defense ala Pernell Whitaker and Willie Pep. And since I did not throw a single punch the whole round I lost. The guy in my corner snapped, "It's supposed to be the manly art of self defense."

With that advice, you'll be able to put crowds to sleep in gyms and bars across the fruited plaisn and still walk away with your pride, body and winning record intact.
