Good, so I'll continue having zero sympathy for John Walker Lindh
From a starry-eyed piece in Esquire:
Whatever sympathy there was for Lindh was based on the idea that he was an idealist, and therefore a fool. That he took a wrong turn. That he was a starry-eyed kid, in over his head. That he was looking for his Muslim merit badge. That he stumbled and bumbled his way into Afghanistan. The problem with this idea is that it sells John Walker Lindh short. It doesn't give him credit for his sense of purpose or his vast reserves of will. It doesn't give him credit for what it took to get to Afghanistan, much less what it took for him to get back to America.Posted by Karol at June 23, 2006 05:39 PM | TrackBack

This is the same sort of story you read about serial killers when the neighbors are interviewed:
"Johnnie, was such a polite and respectful boy. He was quiet and never bothered the neighbors. I never dreamed he would rape and kill 15 woman."

Thus: cynicism is sophisticated pessimism.
Posted by: Dave at June 23, 2006 07:52 PMOh gosh... like all the other crap that went out in the trash I totally forgot about that piece of garbage - I shall continue to do so. Let Cindy Sheehan worry about him, damn, know what, they should date. She's single right? What a power couple those two would make. So well suited for one another.
Posted by: Ari at June 23, 2006 09:18 PMI always knew from newspapers, people jailed for treason will find their death from hands of other inmates. I just wait for it to happen; dont we have any patriots, really american born-american raised, who anyway will die in jail to send this animal to his virgins? You will be in history book forever and I will campaign to support you any way I can. And,finally,in 15-20 years it will be a national holiday, so your relatives and our nation will be proud of you forever.
Ala, despite the Constitution, we do not execute traiots like Lindh (or for that matter traitors like Pollard and Larry Franklin).

He's more likely to be shanked for his gym shoes. The Esquire story was the biggest piece of crap I have read in a long time. What garbage.

I find Lindh's treatment interesting when compared to non-white US citizens charged with the same crime.
