I'm never getting married
From an article on swinging sent to me by Allah:
But in an era where at least one partner will have an affair in approximately 80 percent of all marriages, rigid monogamy is as outdated as homophobia.
80%! Jeeeeeezus.

That article was downright depressing.
Posted by: Mark Harris at July 5, 2006 10:34 AMSo when is the Monogamy Protection Amendment going to be proposed in Congress?
Posted by: New York Hotlist at July 5, 2006 10:59 AMNote how the article doesn't even bother to cite the source for this statistic.

I made the same observation. I blogged it and emailed the editors.
I think I'm going to start adding unattributed, outrageous statistics to the end of every comment and post.
Because there are approximately 3.2 billion blog comments posted every day.
Posted by: Joe Grossberg at July 5, 2006 11:23 AMGood for you, Joe. I was going to attack the stat based on the study which I consider flawed, biased, and bullshit. But, upon reading the article, it seems like they just pulled the 80% out of the air.
It's okay, Karol. You can get married now. :)
Posted by: sam at July 5, 2006 11:29 AMEven if it's true, I still think marriage is a good idea, simply because the stats still show how much better adjusted kids from married households are.
Posted by: T. at July 5, 2006 11:30 AMHa ha ha! I read your article, Joe. Originally, I had posted here, "I call bullshit!" but deleted it at the last minute.

Kids from single parent households beat the crap out of the "better adjusted kids" everyday and twice on Sundays. Plus, we take their lunch money.
Posted by: Not Dawn Summers at July 5, 2006 01:05 PMNo one has commented on the SUBJECT of the article. Everyone is either commenting about the "stats source" (yes, poor reporting) or marriage. This article is not about marriage per se, its about the sex lives of a couple, married or not, children or not. Sexual exploration. Not single parent households.
Posted by: Flora at July 5, 2006 02:01 PMRight. It's the same old story that everybody is out there swinging, therefore, it's okay for you to do it, too. Ain't buying it.
Posted by: sam at July 5, 2006 02:52 PMI doubt most people are out there swinging. But I bet a lot of people are masterbating and fantasizing about it. I don't think the article was implying it was ok for everyone. It was an observation of a lifestyle. Isn't it better that a couple consent to do something like that together rather than one of them cheating on the other? Of course, this assumes both partners would have to be into that type of thing and copnsent.
Posted by: Flora at July 5, 2006 03:53 PMAllah is certainly a ray of sunshine when it comes to relationships. The fact the statistic isn't sourced doesn't mean it doesn't have a source, it just wasn't provided. Based on personal observation I'd say it's probably pretty close to being accurate, at least here in California.
I wish I didn't know now what I didn't know then.

It was an observation of a lifestyle.
If it was merely an "observation" they wouldn't have felt the need for the phony stats and phony studies supporting their "observation."
Isn't it better that a couple consent to do something like that together rather than one of them cheating on the other?
No. Both suck.
The fact the statistic isn't sourced doesn't mean it doesn't have a source, it just wasn't provided.
Right. lol! Yet, they provided the source for their other nutty stats. And as Joe wrote on his blog, they are from an "online survey of 1,092 swingers — self-selected and extremely unrepresentative of the general population's sexual attitudes." I assume the 80% was from an even more unreliable and biased source or the author just made it up.
Posted by: sam at July 5, 2006 04:11 PMPeople still sling around the "50% divorce rate" myth, which isn't even based on flawed facts. It's based on no facts.
Add to that the whole cloth nonsense that still is with us as a result of that pervert Kinsey's personal obsessions, and you've got a healthy reason for skepticism whenever such statistics are brought up.
In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if that 80% cheating claim comes from Kinsey.
