A Jew, but not for Jesus
I saw a Jews for Jesus pamphlet recently with Jackie Mason's face on it. I thought that was odd...Jackie a Jew for Jesus? That just can't be! It turns out, it isn't. And Jackie is suing.

I never liked Mason after he fought the paternity of his daughter. He lived with the mother for years. I saw a video of the little girl when she was only three years old and she was the spitting image of him and still he fought taking a paternity test and giving her the support she deserved.

Posted by: sara at August 25, 2006 03:20 PMCan someone explain Jews for Jesus to me? Doesn't the 'for Jesus' part define one as a Christian? Not that the label matters, you are what you are, and you believe what you believe. I'm just curious about this group.
Posted by: delbrians at August 25, 2006 03:59 PMYeah, they're just Christians going after secular Jews. It's funny when you realize they're competing with the Lubavitchers for the same group of would-be converts.
Posted by: Sam L. at August 25, 2006 04:15 PMDelbrians,
I'm sure they'll be happy to send someone by your home this weekend. Then you can have this conversation (which I had once with a J4J on Wall Street).
"So, what's the deal."
"Well, we're Jews. But we also happen to believe in Jesus."
"You mean, like you're a Jew, but you acknowledge that Jesus was a Jew, a real historical person and that he was maybe like a wise teacher or prophet?"
"No. He was the messiah."
"Soooo, you're a Jew who believes Jesus was the Messiah."
"Right."
"In other words, you're a Christian."
"No. I'm Jewish."
"You were born Jewish?"
"Yes."
"But you converted to Christianity?"
"No."
"But you believe Jesus was the Messiah."
"Yes."
"And that he brought word of a new covenant, was sacrificed for our sins and yadda yadda yadda."
"Yes."
"So you're a Christian."
"No. I'm Jewish."
"But Jews don't believe that Jesus was the Messiah."
"Well, we're Jews and we do."
"But no, you're not."
"Yeah, we are."
"Are not!"
"Are to!"
"ARE NOT!"
"ARE TO!"
Rinse. Lather. Repeat.

Posted by: sam at August 25, 2006 04:39 PMI think the main point your missing here is that someone is born Jewish, they cannot change that. Just as there is a "difference" between someone who converts to Judaism and someone who is born Jewish. They believe the scriptures have been fulfilled.
So then one can argue that you can be a Jewish Christian. In fact most early Christians were Jews (JC was a Jew!...LOL).
It is a matter of faith. My favorite story is Adam and Eve as the only Humans....hmmmm...maybe radical redneck is normal.
YOU can classify them however you like but they do see themselves Jews practicing as Evangical Christians, however strange it sounds.
Damn, Jackie Mason's daughter looked just like him at 3 yrs...must've been a butt-ugly girl.
Posted by: dan the Democrat at August 25, 2006 05:00 PMJews for Jesus believe the scriptures have been fulfilled through the coming of Christ....
sorry for the babble
Personally, I think they're hi on something.
Posted by: dan the Democrat at August 25, 2006 05:02 PMJews for Jesus is just blacks for the KKK, marxists for Wall St., etc.

Nah, she was cutie. Now as an adult, I hear she is also a comedian and lives in NYC.
Posted by: sam at August 25, 2006 08:02 PMMaybe they're thinking of Jackie Vernon, who was the voice of 'Frosty the Snowman.'
Posted by: Dino at August 25, 2006 09:14 PMThe Messiah is supposed to put the world under the authority of Judaism. So if Christians (members of the movement Jesus started) all convert to Judaism, we'll admit that Jesus was the Messiah after all.
I do not regard this as likely.
Posted by: Joseph Hertzlinger at August 27, 2006 12:30 AMJackie Mason is a public figure. JFJ didn't claim he was a JFJ, didn't defame him, and didn't use him to raise money.
Public figures are fair game... both to name and likeness and image as long as it the fair use of the image doesn't reflect badly upon moral or legal matters like showing a public figure driving while drunk or using illegal narcotics. The tract does none of this, so the lawsuit is bizarre legally speaking.
Anyone ever wonder why tabloids almost always win when embarrassed movie stars sue them for fake photographs or misleading headlines? The First Amendment protects them.
