History can make you anything.
Barry Goldwater: Liberal. Al Franken, Ted Kennedy, James Carville and Hillary Clinton say so.

I guess they're just dying for William F. Buckley to pass away, so they can throw some footage of his debate with Reagan over the Panama Canal into a documentary, to prove he was a liberal too.
Posted by: Dino at August 25, 2006 07:29 PMRidiculous.
Posted by: T. at August 25, 2006 10:25 PMI've never seen a party thrive so much on the ignorance of own voters.

Posted by: Marco at August 26, 2006 10:46 AMBarry Goldwater became a kind of reverse Harry Truman. Just like a lot of Republicans gush about old Harry (it was pathetic to see the Weekly Standard take Peter Beinert to task for saying Truman was a TNR type of guy when the Weekly Standard insisted that Truman was more of a Standard type), Goldwater became one of the Democrats's favorite Republicans, especially when he came out for letting homosexuals in the armed forces, trashing the Christian Coalition and the GOP as a "bunch of kooks" and even telling the GOP to back off investigating Whitewater. What was conservative in 1964 was not what was conservative in 1994. I think Goldwater had a strong libertarian streak which can often be consfused with social liberalism.
Posted by: Von Bek at August 26, 2006 12:21 PMdoes this mean that liberals are admitting that voting against the civil rights act (is that the one he voted against?) is a liberal position?
Posted by: brent j. at August 26, 2006 04:30 PMNo Brent, I'm pretty sure that voting against the civil rights act, or at least the voting rights act, is still the conservative thing to do, since the Republicans blocked its reauthorization a couple of months ago. Must be somthing else.
Posted by: Sam L. at August 26, 2006 04:53 PMWell Barry Goldwater, like the RINO's John Warner adn Chuck Hagel, was very anti Israel.
Posted by: Grasshopper at August 27, 2006 10:16 AMI think it's great that Hillary Clinton has payed homage to Barry Goldwater. Now, in the presidential debates, we can bring out Goldwater's platform and find out how much of it she will be re-introducing as president.
Posted by: Dorian Davis at August 27, 2006 05:40 PMActually, "Grasshopper," Senator Goldwater was PRO-Israel.
And "Sam L.", a higher percentage of Republicans supported the '64 Civil Rights Act, than did Democrats.
Goldwater was very explicit that he believed the bill contained aspects which were unconstitutional.
Current West Virginia Democrat Senator Robert Byrd also voted NO on the Civil Rights Act, but for some reason, I imagine commenter "Sam L." is not animated about that fact.
I also suspect "Sam L." doesn't show up at Al Gore's speeches to ask the former Vice Prez why his father---Senator Al Gore Sr.---voted NO on the Civil Rights Act of '64.

There's a lot to be said for having a populist agenda in a democracy, rather than, pandering to oligarchists.
Posted by: David at August 28, 2006 10:02 AMI recently read "Concience of a Conservative", and he did sound libertarian.
If Galdwater's ideas appeal to people on the Left - good for them. I think a lot of so-called progressives would like to keep the gov-t in check. I suspect there are a lot of people who don't want socialism or anything like that, but who vote Democrat because they fear right-wing Christians more than anything in the world.
This tree-hugging, war-hating, constitutional-loving patriot says thanks, Ivan. When we get past the labels and listen to each other, we find we agree on more than we disagree. Sometimes, we even learn from each other.

Yes, and there are a lot of people who believe Elvis is still alive. What do they have in common? That's right: they're idiots.
